End of an era: Roma legend Totti to retire at the end of this season

NEW ROMA SPORTING director Monchi has revealed that club legend Francesco Totti will retire at the end of this season.

The 40-year-old, who made his professional debut at 16 in 1993 before going on to amass 783 appearances for the club, will become a director with the Giallorossi.

“In terms of Totti, I already knew that there was an agreement with the club that this would be his final year as a player, then he’d start as a director,” said the former Sevilla director, who was presented in his new role today.

“Francesco is Roma, I want to be as close to him as possible. I’d love to learn even one per cent of the huge amount that he knows.”

Totti turned down numerous offers over the years to remain with his boyhood club and won the Scudetto in 2001 as well as two Coppa Italias.

In more recent times, the veteran has become a bit-part player for the Serie A side.

At international level, he was part of the 2006 World Cup-winning team and earned a total of 58 caps — scoring 9 goals.
