Wolves confirm Davis will stay in charge until new year after Beale snub – ‘we have no plans to rush’

Wolves have confirmed that caretaker manager Steve Davis will remain in charge of the club until the new year after they were snubbed by Michael Beale.

The Premier League club have opted to give Davis more tie after they were rejected by QPR head coach Beale on Thursday afternoon.

This snub followed Julen Lopetegui’s decision to turn down the job for personal reasons after he departed La Liga side Sevilla.

Wolves have been looking for a new manager since sacking Bruno Lage earlier this month and Davis has been in charge for three games.

Chairman Jeff Shi said: “In the short time Steve and his team have been in interim charge of the first-team, we have already seen improvements to the group, with the players responding well to their methods and the changes they have started to implement.

“Steve understands the culture and standards set at this club, and we want to give him and his team clarity on their positions and allow them the best possible opportunity for success.

“While there are no outstanding candidates to appoint on a permanent basis to the head coach position, we have complete faith in their ability and leadership to continue their roles into the World Cup break and new year.

“We have no plans to rush our search for a new permanent head coach and will not compromise in any way our approach to appointing the person we believe to be the perfect fit for our club, our squad and the role of head coach at Wolves.”

Davis will continue to be assisted by James Collins and Tony Roberts and the club will look to extend the coaching team to provide more support.

Former coach Rob Edwards and ex-Lyon coach Peter Bosz were interviewed while Nuno Espirito Santo, who led the team from 2017 until 2021, was under consideration.

QPR’s Beale was flattered to be offered the opportunity to talk to Wolves.

The 42-year-old has impressed in his first job in management, taking Rangers to the top of the Sky Bet Championship following a 3-0 home win over Cardiff on Wednesday night.

Wolves had made Beale, who was assistant to Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa before joining QPR in the summer, their top choice.

However, after being notified of a formal approach late on Wednesday, Beale opted to stay at Loftus Road.

Liverpool star Henderson facing ‘no disciplinary action’ after clash with Arsenal defender Gabriel

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will not face any disciplinary action after he clashed with Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes earlier this month.

The two players clashed late into Arsenal’s 3-2 win at the Emirates. This came after the hosts were awarded a penalty.

An investigation was launched amid claims that the centre-midfielder – who strenuously denied the allegation – made a comment which enraged Gabriel.

However, after launching an investigation during which both men and six more players provided witness statements, the Football Association has confirmed it will take no further action.

An FA spokesperson said: “Following an investigation into an allegation received by The FA in the Premier League fixture between Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC on Sunday 9 October 2022, The FA can confirm that it will not be taking any disciplinary action.

“The FA received a complaint about an incident involving two players in this fixture. As a result of the complaint, The FA conducted a full and thorough investigation.

“The investigation included taking witness statements from the complainant and accused, along with an additional six players who were within proximity of the alleged incident, reviewing multiple angles of video footage, and seeking independent linguistics experts evidence.

“None of the witnesses heard the alleged comment, and the player accused strenuously denied the allegation throughout.

“Whilst The FA is entirely satisfied that the allegation was made in good faith, it is equally satisfied that there is no case to answer.”

The incident happened after Arsenal had been awarded a 76th-minute spot-kick for Thiago Alcantara’s challenge on Gabriel Jesus, which was upheld by VAR.

Tempers flared as players from both sides became involved and referee Michael Oliver spoke to managers Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp on the sidelines, although neither elaborated on the cause during their post-match press conferences.

Bukayo Saka ultimately converted the penalty to hand the home side victory and the FA later confirmed it was reviewing the incident.

Speaking on the flash point after the final whistle, Mikel Arteta stated: “It was an incident that happened. Whatever happens on that pitch stays on that pitch.”

Jurgen Klopp discusses touchline ban for City outburst; ‘expects’ Henderson to play vs Leeds

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he does not know if he should have been given a touchline ban after being sent off during the victory over Manchester City earlier this month.

Klopp was red-carded late on in the 1-0 win at Anfield on October 16 after directing angry protests at referee Anthony Taylor and his assistant over no foul being given for a challenge on Mohamed Salah by Bernardo Silva.

On Thursday the Football Association announced the German, having accepted his behaviour was “improper”, had been handed a £30,000 fine over the incident by an independent panel, but he avoided a touchline ban.

The FA may choose to appeal that decision once it receives the written reasons from the panel.

Asked on Friday if he felt it was a fair punishment, Klopp told a press conference: “I know what I said, and I know that saying that, but from a further distance and with a different face, it would have been completely fine. I said ‘how can you not, how can you not?’

“I think the most expensive face, I’m not sure in the world, but at least here. I think it’s a lot of money but I heard it will be invested for something good, and that’s fine.

“Should I have got a ban? I don’t know. I never was in the situation, I never had a red card, I didn’t ever have a yellow card as far as I know.

“I’m the wrong person that you should ask. I have no idea about what the usual things are. I had a touchline ban years ago in the Champions League with (Borussia) Dortmund, very similar situation, but obviously the Champions League is slightly different.

“I’m not happy or relieved or whatever. It’s just I was waiting for the punishment, take it, and then go from there.”

Klopp was speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League home clash with Leeds, for which he confirmed Thiago Alcantara, having recovered from an ear infection, would be available.

Fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson came off with a knee injury in the 3-0 Champions League win at Ajax on Wednesday, and Klopp said of the skipper: “With Hendo we have to wait a little bit, it’s a knock, knee was a bit stiff yesterday, he had only treatment.

“So we will see how he will be today. I expect him to be OK to be honest.”

The result against Ajax saw the Reds bouncing back four days after the shock 1-0 loss at strugglers Nottingham Forest in their last Premier League outing.

In Leeds, the Reds – currently eighth in the table – are facing another side in the relegation zone, and Jesse Marsch’s side are on a four-match losing streak.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright admits he gets ‘nervy’ watching ‘weird’ Gunners defender

Ian Wright has admitted that Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes makes him feel “a little nervy”.

Gabriel joined the Gunners from Lille for a fee in the region of £23million in 2020.

The 24-year-old has been solid since moving to England and recently penned a new five-year contract extension.

He was linked with a move to Juventus in the summer transfer window, but a deal failed to materialise.

Despite looking like a very solid defender most of the time, Gabriel is arguably the least reliable and most inconsistent player in Mikel Arteta’s defence.

During Sunday’s emphatic 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest, the Brazilian centre-half had a moment of madness in his own box.

He skewed a pass intended for Granit Xhaka into the direction of Forest midfielder Jesse Lingard, who failed to take his side’s biggest chance of the game, with Ben White saving Gabriel’s blushes with an outstanding block.

Arsenal legend Wright was reluctant to pick out an Arsenal player who is potentially a weak link, but admitted that Gabriel makes him feel nervous at times with some of the “weird” things he does on the pitch.

“It looks weird, doesn’t it,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

“That is the only thing, for me, if you are going to be critical of Arsenal’s defence, then you would probably say it’s with someone like Gabriel.

“He does things which just make you a little nervy and that was another one.”

Gabriel played last season alongside White in the heart of Arsenal’s defence.

In 2022-23, however, the Brazil international has been partnered with William Saliba.

The Frenchman spent last season on loan with Marseille, where he was a roaring success, being named Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year as the club qualified for the Champions League, something Arsenal failed to do.

After agreeing a new contract with Gabriel, the Gunners are prioritising agreeing fresh terms with Saliba.

Reliable journalist David Ornstein reported on Monday that an offer has been put on the table.

Ornstein wrote for The Athletic: ‘There is no agreement so far but the dialogue will continue, as the north London side try to tie down a player who appears fundamental to Arteta’s team and has many admirers across Europe.’

The 21-year-old’s current deal expires in 2023, but the club have the option to extend it by a further year.

His long-term future in north London was up in the air after failing to make a first-team appearance in three years as an Arsenal player.

Saliba joined in 2019 but was sent back on loan to Saint-Etienne for the following campaign as part of the deal.

After failing to impress Mikel Arteta, he was loaned out again, this time to OGC Nice halfway through 20-21 after making several appearances for the club’s under-21s.

The decision to loan him out to Marseille frustrated fans, who thought he should have stayed in London, or been loaned out to another English club.

It was a masterstroke from Arteta, however, who admitted Saliba would not have played nearly enough with Arsenal not competing in Europe last term.

Saliba flourished with Marseille and fans will look back at his 21-22 campaign as an integral one in his development.

Toulon have organised a mouth-watering clash against a top Super Rugby side

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS TOULON will tackle the South African Super Rugby team the Sharks in a friendly in February, the French club tweeted on Sunday.

The idea of a friendly between the two sides was mooted earlier in the week when Sharks manager John Smit, South Africa’s 2007 World Cup winning captain, threw down the gauntlet and tweeted a direct challenge to Toulon.

He said Tuesday: “Its easier to win Heineken (European) Cup than to contest a @SuperRugby title, @RCTofficiel how do u feel about a game against the SA Conf champs 2014?”

That prompted Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal to quip in a press conference later that day: “I’ve seen Jaws I, II and III and sharks don’t scare me!”

But on Sunday, Toulon’s official twitter account posted the message: “Toulon accept John Smit’s challenge and will face the Sharks on February 5, 2015 at Mayol.”

The match will take place in Toulon on the same weekend as the first round of Six Nations matches, meaning the French champions will be badly depleted from international call-ups.

But Super Rugby semi-finallists the Sharks will still be in their pre-season as the 2015 Super Rugby competition — pitting teams from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia against each other — starts a week later.

According to organisers SL Events, talks had been ongoing before Smit’s tweet about a possible match.

It will pit current Toulon fly-half Frederic Michalak against the team where he twice spent a year, in 2008 and 2011.

Boudjellal claimed on Tuesday that when he told manager Bernard Laporte about the challenge, the former France coach responded: “If they want to play the champions, it’s where they want, when they want!”

Premier League urged to take drastic pre-World Cup action in wake of Ben Chilwell injury

The Premier League has been urged to take drastic action before the World Cup to avoid further injuries.

That’s according to Jamie O’Hara, who felt for Ben Chilwell after the Chelsea and England star hobbled off at the end of the Blues’ win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

Chilwell joins Kyle Walker and Reece James as full-back doubts for England ahead of the World Cup.

And with less than three weeks to go before England’s Group B opener against Iran, O’Hara has urged the Premier League to postpone the final round of games before the World Cup to avoid further problems for Gareth Southgate and other national team managers.

“Cancel the last round of games in the Premier League, give them a bit of breathing space,” he told talkSPORT. “The Premier League should do it, or the players should get involved. This is the problem with the Premier League.

“It’s all about money, all about getting the revenue in. The players are not being protected. It’s as simple as that. There are too many games and too many injuries and England are going to suffer.

“You could see in [Chilwell’s] face, he went white instantly. You know he’s done. It’s a six-week injury, four to six weeks so it kills his World Cup hopes. You’ve lost Reece James, you’ve lost Ben Chilwell, but for England it’s a serious problem.

“Players are dropping like flies. We keep going on about the amount of fixtures they have to squeeze in before the World Cup starts, and big games too.”

Asked whether Chilwell’s injury ended his World Cup hopes, Graham Potter said after the game: “I think you would have to say so, yeah.

“Obviously I don’t want to add any more than that but when a player pulls up like he did and he felt it so it’s never positive.

“I spoke to him briefly. He felt something as he was setting off so he’s disappointed and he’s upset. It’s not positive at the moment.

“It’s a blow to see him pull up like that. It’s not a great sight so fingers crossed when we get it scanned it isn’t as bad.”

CONNACHT BROUGHT THEIR unbeaten home run to a seventh game on another night of feelgood rugby at the Sportsground.

Two tries from Danie Poolman gave the hosts a half-time advantage of 15 – 12. And although Bayonne would start the second half even better than they did the first, the assured kicking of Jack Carty and a breakaway try from Bundee Aki allowed them to open up a lead going in to the final quarter.

Three penalties from Martin Bustos Moyano sent the visitors into an early 9 – 3 lead before Poolman crossed for the opening try after 20 minutes.

While Rodney Ah You came under pressure at times in the scrum, the line-out consistently looked like a useful weapon for Pat Lam’s side. it was on the back of one such rolling maul that Poolman was unleashed on a scything run to the try-line.

Carty’s conversion would nudge the home side in front for the first time, but Bayonne were able to pick off another opportunity after 28 minutes.

On the stroke of half-time however, another powerful maul was the basis for a sweeping back-line move with Carty and Aki involved before Poolman crossed for his second.

Though Carty was unable to add the conversion, he was on target again 13 minutes into the second half after Florian Lapeyrde’s try had pushed the visitors in to a four-point lead.

Whether trailing 15 – 19 or 18 -19, Connacht did not panic and Carty calmly stroked his side into the lead after 59 minutes following Lapeyrade was sin-binned.

From there, the floodgates opened. Kieran Marmion’s high box kick fell loosed on the edge of the 22 and Aki gratefully picked up to run in his first try for the western province. After a ding-dong opening 50 minutes, the result was put beyond all doubt when McSharry grounded a bonus point try.

That score was another for the maul’s highlight reel, but the pack opted to keep the next score for themselves, Willie Faloon claiming the fifth try in this five-point success.

The maximum return sees Connacht move to within a point of Exeter Chiefs in Pool 2 of the Challenge Cup.
