Hannah Tyrrell named Player of the Month after sensational return to inter-county football

IN-FORM DUBLIN FORWARD Hannah Tyrrell has scooped The Croke Park/LGFA Player of the Month award for May.

Tyrrell has enjoyed a sensational return to inter-county football over the past few weeks, establishing herself as a key figure for the Sky Blues after recently bringing the curtain down on a glittering Irish international rugby career.

With 3-22 to her name from four games, Irish rugby’s loss certainly has been Dublin football’s gain with the former international star taking to her Gaelic football roots once again like a duck to water.

The 30-year-old marked her comeback with 1-5 against Waterford at Parnell Park on 23 May, before clocking a hefty tally of 2-7 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh as Dublin beat Cork six days later.

Adding another dynamic to the All-Ireland champions’ already lethal attack, Tyrrell chipped in with three pointed frees against Tipperary in June, before she hit 0-7 (4f) in the Division 1 semi-final win over Mayo last weekend.

Next up is the top-flight final against Cork at Croke Park on Saturday, 26 June, as Dublin look to win just a second-ever Division 1 crown, and Tyrrell looks to continue her electric form on the biggest stage.

She is back in the Sky Blue fold for the first time since 2014, her international Sevens and 15s rugby career coming in the interim.

Now playing her club football with Na Fianna, having previously won an intermediate county championship with her native Round Towers, Clondalkin, Tyrrell is an All-Ireland U16 winning goalkeeper, and the holder of All-Ireland minor and Senior B titles.

Tyrrell was also nominated for the first-ever PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month in football award, though that was won by Cork stalwart Ciara O’Sullivan.

‘I want to win it this year. If that’s not the case, I will accept. It’s part of life’ – Mane

SADIO MANE WOULD “understand” if the 2019-20 Premer League season was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, even though Liverpool are just two wins away from claiming the title.

The Reds have been champions-in-waiting for some time, having taken 82 points from 29 games to open up a 25-point lead over Manchester City.

Yet the Premier League, like the vast majority of competitions across the world, has been halted due to restrictions designed to limit the spread of Covid-19.

It remains to be seen when, or even if, the Premier League will return as the hiatus has extended past the beginning of May already.

However, Mane insists there are bigger concerns given over 83,000 people have died after contracting coronavirus worldwide.

Asked if he felt like a champion already, Mane told talkSPORT: “I think not yet. I love my job and I love football, I want to win on the pitch. I want to win the games and I want to get the trophy, it’s what I would love. But with this situation, whatever happens I will understand.

“It has been difficult for Liverpool, but it has been more difficult for many millions of people around the world. Some people have lost family members and that is the more complicated situation.

“But for myself, it’s my dream and I want to win it this year. If that’s not the case, I will accept. It’s part of life. Hopefully we will win it next year.”

Some – such as Manchester United’s Luke Shaw – have suggested the Premier League should be voided if the season cannot resume.

However, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said earlier this week he sees “no way” in which Liverpool could be denied the title.

The Reds have not won a top-flight championship since 1989-90, prior to the inception of the Premier League.

Cork footballer Ciara O’Sullivan and Offaly’s Gráinne Egan are the first-ever winners of the new PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month awards, with Kerry ace David Clifford and Antrim hurler Ciarán Clarke landing the PwC GAA/GPA men’s equivalent.

Clifford again underlined his class with a string of high-quality performances for Kerry through the month of May, scoring a remarkable 3-6 against Galway and 1-6 against Dublin.

And Clarke has been central through Antrim’s return to Division 1 hurling, particularly catching the eye when he chipped in with 1-11 (1-1 from play) as the Saffron recorded a massive opening day win over Clare.

The new ladies football and camogie monthly awards come after PwC agreed a new sponsorship deal with the Gaelic Players Association [GPA] to benefit female inter-county players.

The monthly awards scheme recognises outstanding individual achievements in both codes, and were presented for the first time alongside their male equivalents with equal prizes on offer.

Award winners across all four codes are voted for by the GPA’s membership.

CORK AND DONEGAL a feast of goals at Tuam Stadium as defending champions Cork held on to advance to the Lidl National Football League Division 1 final after a hard-fought win.

Six goals in the first-half saw the sides even at the break, with Donegal much the happier of the two sides having played against the strong wind.

Winners from 2019, Cork got off to the perfect start and struck for 2-2 in the opening four minutes with Brid and Ciara O’Sullivan shooting to the net.

But Donegal responded in style, with two goals of their own within 30 seconds of each other.

The first arrived from Katy Herron after some good play from Niamh McLaughlin and Karen Guthrie. From the restart, Guthrie regained possession and coolly finished past Martina O’Brien, to make it 2-2 to 2-0 with eight minutes played.

The goals continued to flow with Cork working the ball down the other end, and Máire O’Callaghan applied the finishing touch. Ciara O’Sullivan and Finn added points for Cork, before Donegal got their third goal, with Guthrie scoring her second of the half.

But Donegal finished the half the stronger of the two, with frees from Geraldine McLaughlin and Guthrie helping to put one between the sides. Geraldine McLaughlin pointed on the half-time whistle to see the teams level at the break, 3-5 to 3-5.

Guthrie got the first score of the second-half with half-time substitute Eimear Scally replying for the Munster side. Geraldine McLaughlin put Donegal back in front, but once more Finn, levelled matters at the other end.

With 38 minutes gone, Hannah Looney picked up the ball for Cork, played it to Melissa Duggan and her pass was palmed to the net by Finn, which gave Cork a crucial one-goal cushion.

Finn added a point from the restart, with Guthrie raising the white flag at the other end. The fifth Cork goal came just before the water break when Meabh Cahalane intercepted a Donegal pass, played it to Sadhbh O’Leary who burst forward and found Brid O’Sullivan. O’Leary accepted the return pass and she blasted to the back of the net.

Geraldine McLaughlin pulled a point back for Donegal before a double save denied them what looked like a certain goal. First, O’Brien denied Niamh McLaughlin and when Guthrie picked up the rebound, she looked like finding the net, only to be denied by Roisin Phelan.

Two points from Finn saw Cork lead 5-10 to 3-12 with time running out but Donegal with Kate McClenaghan’s shot narrowly clearing the bar, the full-time whistle was a welcome blast as Cork move on to the final.

Father of Tyler Toland hits back at ‘ludicrous’ Vera Pauw claims and calls on FAI to intervene

THE FATHER OF exiled Republic of Ireland Women’s midfielder Tyler Toland has called on the FAI to intervene in a simmering row that is threatening the international career of his daughter.

Maurice Toland says an independent mediator should be brought in following a series of allegations by Ireland Vera Pauw on Friday.

Pauw said that she had been subjected to “harassment and intimidation” by the Donegal man over his daughter’s absence from the Irish squad, claims he vehemently denies.

Toland, capped 13 times at senior level, has not been selected since she was an unused substitute for a game against Greece in November 2019.

Two months later, Toland’s services were sought for the Republic of Ireland under-19s ahead of a double-header against Russia in Marbella in March 2020. Despite the player’s willingness to travel, she wasn’t selected for the trip.

“The only conversation I have ever had with Vera Pauw was in January 2020, but to say that I harassed or intimidated her during that call is ludicrous,” he said.

“I texted Vera and asked when was convenient for her to speak. She called me and we spoke for around half-an-hour.

“I felt that if Tyler wasn’t in the plans for the senior team, it would have been good for her development and for game time to get with the under-19s. And the under-19 manager has contacted me asking about her availability, so this wasn’t me trying to influence or get Tyler selected.”

An email to the player’s father from Ruud Dokter, the FAI’s High Performance Director, in February 2020 acknowledged: ‘It is important that Tyler and Vera have a conversation shortly regarding Tyler’s future with international football.’

“Really, this should have been addressed 18 months ago,” Maurice Toland said.

“From that day to this, Tyler hasn’t been selected on an Ireland squad. Tyler has never declined the chance to play for Ireland and has never said that she would not play for Ireland under Vera.

“Tyler has always given what she can for Ireland. The comment that she needed to show ‘guts’ was below the belt. Remember, three years ago Tyler – she had just turned 17 – played almost an hour of a qualifier against Northern Ireland with two fractures on a knee.

“The FAI should step in here and do something. We know there is a big Dutch influence at the FAI and Irish coaches are afraid to speak up in case their own jobs come under threat.

“Someone has to step in here and get to the bottom of this. Allegations have been made against me — but at the end of the day my daughter and her future is the most important thing here.

“She’s only 18, but has played under Lorraine Counihane, Sharon Boyle, Sean Byrne, Dave Bell, Dave Connell, Colin Bell and Tom O’Connor for Ireland teams.

“Alan Mahon, a former Irish international, was her manager at Man City for a while. All of those people I think would stand over Tyler’s character, which has been savaged by Vera’s comments on Friday.

“The goalposts have been moved so often. At first, Vera said Tyler wasn’t getting enough game time at Man City; then she said the move to Man City wasn’t working out, that Tyler wasn’t the player she was; Tyler went on loan to Glasgow and all of a sudden it wasn’t about game time; now, she has come out and made it about me.”

Toland sent the Irish manager a text on 14 April in which she conveyed her wish for a ‘fresh start’, saying: “I feel I have a lot to give. I’m really working hard on my game and I am willing to do whatever it takes to play with you and get back in your team.” At the time of writing, a response had not been received.

Toland made her Irish debut in 2017, becoming the country’s youngest senior player in history. The midfielder had just signed for Manchester City before scoring in a player of the match display against Montenegro.

Pauw was among the attendance at Tallaght when Ireland beat Montenegro, a day before her unveiling as the new Ireland manager.

Toland — now on loan at Glasgow City — was left on the bench for games against Ukraine and Greece in 2019, when certain comments the manager is alleged to have made have been questioned by the player’s father.

Maurice Toland said: “One of the first things Vera said to Tyler came during a physio appointment. She said to her: ‘You think that you have made it? You have a long way to go.’ Tyler acknowledged that; she knew she had, and still has, a long way to go in the game.

“Vera told Tyler that she looked ‘too leggy’, that her legs had got 10cm bigger since she moved to City and suggested that she would pick up an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury ‘by the second week in November’ if she maintained the training she was doing.

“In Athens, Tyler asked for a meeting. Vera said, ‘Not tonight,’ as she was going sightseeing and the following day at breakfast, in front of a large group. After that, Vera questioned Tyler:’ Why aren’t you on my team? I was told that you were the first name on the team-sheet’.

“Tyler felt that she was ‘one of the sharpest’ players at training in that camp, but Vera’s response was: ‘I don’t care how sharp you are in training, you’re not paying me enough respect’.”

When the midfielder’s weight dropped from 63kgs to 57kgs, those close to her concerned about her physical and mental wellbeing.

The player’s father, who played for Finn Harps in the 1990s, said: “It was then we realised how deep that it went. You can see that when you compare pictures from the Montenegro game to a couple of months later.

“This is not about football. At this stage, football is secondary. This isn’t about who’s in a squad or who’s starting in a team — it has gone way beyond that at this point.

“As far as football management goes, it’s entirely a manager’s prerogative who they select for a squad and who they pick on the team.

“You have to respect a manager and the manager’s decision. Sometimes, you may not like a decision, but you suck that up. Respect is a two-way thing. What we have here is about the treatment of a young player who had just turned 18 and moved away from home for the first time.

“Vera spoke on Friday about having feelings — how does she think this leaves an 18-year-old player feeling?

“Vera said Tyler had to call and apologise – apologise for what exactly? She has said that Tyler has made a ‘mistake’, but hasn’t explained that comment.

“She has said that she wants to ‘save’ Tyler’s career, but her actions suggest otherwise.”

When contacted by The42 for comment, an FAI spokesperson said: “We are aware of the discussion around Tyler Toland and her position with the Republic of Ireland senior women’s team.

“This remains an issue between Tyler and our senior manager Vera Pauw, and Vera has our absolute confidence and support in dealing with this in an appropriate and measured manner but this will rightly remain a process that will not be in the public domain.”

FORMER IRELAND RUGBY international Hannah Tyrrell has been a huge addition for the Dublin ladies this season, having only rejoined the squad in recent weeks.

Hannah Tyrrell is making a huge impact with Dublin after an impressive rugby career.

Tyrrell, who was previously an out-half for Ireland, has been in sensational form for the Dubs and has played a key role in securing their safe passage to the Division 1 final this weekend against Cork.

Her superb displays in the Dublin attack has amassed a tally of 3-22 so far, and has also emerged as a strong free-taker for Mick Bohan’s side.

Tyrrell, who plays her club football with Na Fianna, was involved in the panel briefly in 2014 but is certainly becoming a more prominent figure in the camp this season.

“It’s been a good few years since she’s been back,” Dublin captain Sinéad Aherne began about Tyrrell’s impact since her return.

“She’s had a really successful journey with the international rugby team so she brings so much experience from that set-up. She’s a great athlete and has been going really well.

“She came in a few weeks after we went back. At that stage, she was deciding on the rugby side of her career. Obviously, she had a decision to make in terms of stepping away from that.

“But I think she enjoyed her time when she came into the set-up and decided at this stage of her life that it was something she wanted to give a bit of time to so it worked well for us.”

Aherne added:

“Going back to 2014 is hard to remember but I know Hannah put in a good stint as a goalkeeper in her earlier years as well and you can probably put her anywhere on the pitch. Certainly from the rugby set-up, her athleticism and strength has really improved.

“You can really see all the attributes from that training environment has brought her on as a Gaelic football player. And she was playing with Na Fianna in the club championship last year so I know my own club [St Sylvester’s] had a tough game against her last year.

“She’s a great asset to us. She’s getting used to the players around her as well and there’s been a lot of players moving around in the team. It’s just been a familiarisation process but she’s certainly jumped into it with both feet anyway.”

The All-Ireland four-in-a-row champions are seeking just their second Division 1 crown when they take on Cork at Croke Park this Saturday. The fixture has been selected as a pilot event to test the gradual return of fans to live sport, with 4,000 fans permitted to attend the decider at GAA headquarters.

The sides have already met in the group stages of the league, with Dublin prevailing by just one point at the end of a thrilling encounter.

Tyrrell pocketed 2-7 in that clash at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last month and her performance certainly caught the eye of Cork goalkeeper, and captain, Martin O’Brien.

“She’s coming from a great pedigree,” says O’Brien.

“She’s had how many years of playing professional rugby at that high standard. She really is something else and she tore us apart that day. I don’t think she missed a kick against us and she has a serious leg on her.

“I suppose you can’t pinpoint any one player, and especially when you’re playing the likes of Dublin. They have players throughout the pitch and they’re never relying on just one person to get them over the line.

“You’re obviously going to keep one eye on someone like Hannah but you’ve to keep an eye on the rest of the team as well. We’re not going to be overly focused on any one player but it’s more you limit the damage with a player like that [Tyrrell].”

Huge setback for Munster champs Tipperary with relegation to Division 4 after loss to Longford

OVER SIX MONTHS after one of their greatest days when they achieved Munster final glory, the Tipperary footballers suffered a major setback today with relegation to Division 4 of the football league for 2022.

Tipperary lost out in their Division 3 relegation play-off away to Longford this afternoon by 1-13 to 0-9, the home side claiming a deserved victory as they finished the game strongly.

David Power’s Tipperary team will now be plying their trade in the bottom division next spring, where they will join Cavan. Mickey Graham’s team also won a provincial final in memorable fashion on the same day last November, but lost out to Wicklow in a play-off yesterday.

The crucial score of today’s game at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park arrived in the 47th minute when Dessie Reynolds found the net for Longford. That strike pushed the home team in front 1-8 to 0-8 and they went on to outscore Tipperary by 0-5 to 0-1 from there.

Reynolds hit 1-2 for Longford while Darren Gallagher and Rian Brady scored 0-3 apiece. Conor Sweeney was top scorer for Tipperary with 0-4, while Michael Quinlivan did start the game but was sent to the sin bin during the first half.

Longford have shown impressive resilience after losing their opening game by 16 points to Derry but recovered to preserve their Division 3 status.

In Division 4, Enda McGinley saw his Antrim team claim promotion with success over Waterford by 1-15 to 0-11 in Dungarvan, earlier today.

Antrim’s early scoring burst proved crucial as they raced in front 0-7 to 0-0. That laid the foundations for their eventual win after a game where they were ahead 0-9 to 0-4 at half-time.

Odhran Eastwood scored the only goal of the game in the second half as he finished with 1-5 for Antrim. Tyrone All-Ireland winner McGinley has clinched promotion in his first season in charge of Antrim, joining his old manager Mickey Harte in Division 3 next year, after Harte’s Louth team won their play-off yesterday against Carlow.

They ended up running out 20 point winners and were more than full value for that margin as they controlled the game from pillar to post.

They had the game well and truly wrapped up by half time going in leading 3-13 to 0-8 at the turn around with O’Shea getting two and Knockmore’s Darren McHale marking his first championship start with the third goal.

McHale was impressive throughout the opening 35 minutes ending the half with 1-4 all from play including the first three points of the day for Mayo.

The gap in class between division four and a team who were in last years All Ireland final was well and truly on show, as Mayo took Sligo’s defence apart at their ease.

They moved it at lightning pace and when they needed to, they slowed the ball down and worked the angles to find the right spot to take a point.

Sligo’s early tactic of dropping the ball in long on top of Barry Gorman, one of five changes to the team named in the programme, failed to deliver the desired result and it was only for some fine scoring by Niall Murphy and Sean Carrabine, that they stayed somewhat in touch on the scoreboard.

Mayo lead 1-7 to 0-2 at the first water break, with O’Shea getting his first goal 12 minutes in – they tagged on 2-6 more before the half time break, with O’Shea getting his second goal from close range and McHale finding the net after a Tommy Conroy shot forced Eamon Kilgannon into a good save.

Both sides also hit the crossbar in the first half with Paddy Durcan rattling the Sligo one and Murphy rasping an effort off Rob Hennelly’s bar.

The second half played out a far slower pace than the first with Mayo tagging on five points before the second water break and Sligo two, with McHale adding to his tally from the first half and Ryan O’Donoghue getting some more practice in as Mayo’s new free taker kicking two to go with the brace he tapped over in the first half.
