Mauricio Pochettino: “Icardi is an experienced goalscorer in these type of matches.”

Speaking to RMC ahead of tonight’s Manchester City vs PSG, Mauricio Pochettino explained his decision to start Mauro Icardi with Kylian Mbappé out injured.

“We waited (for Mbappé) and we spoke with the medical staff who are in agreement with him. We took the best decision for everyone. He did not feel like he could start the match, even though he did everything he could in order to be able to be. It was impossible. He is in the squad we will see. Icardi is an experienced goalscorer in these type of matches. He brings different things to our team, in terms of the others. We are going to undoubtedly play in a different way with him. We believe in him, like we believe in Moise.”

“Maybe we will play in a different way, that is normal. We believe in ourselves, we think that we can do something special. We have a flexible system. We can play in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. In any case, we prepared to play in a different way during the match.”

Another name circling is Claudio Ranieri, who has just left Sampdoria. The situation is expected to decant next week, as the club needs a new manager to make decisions on players who are out of contract and define the contours of the summer window to come. Tick tock.
