Official | Kayserispor welcome Atila Turan from Reims

Reims left back Atila Turan has returned home to Turkey to sign for Kayserispor following the expiration of his previous contract.

The 25-year-old let his contract at the Ligue 2 club run down after spending four years at Reims, and will join his new club on a deal until 2020 in the Turkish First Division.

Turan played 15 Ligue 2 games this season as Reims missed out on an instant return back to Ligue 1, but the Turkish U21 international will not be staying around in the fight for promotion.

Wallabies: ‘A dam is about to burst’ with Eddie Jones at the helm

Newly appointed Rugby Australia president Joe Roff feels like a “dam is about to burst” with Eddie Jones at the helm of the Wallabies.

The Wallabies great believes that under Jones the side can grow into a formidable side – one with a psychological edge to their game.

Jones has five Tests to align the stars in the Wallabies camp before the two-time winners descend on France for another crack at the World Cup.

Jones can provide winning edge

Roff feels there is talent in the Australian ranks, but the side lacks a winning mentality, something Jones could well develop during his time in the hot seat.

“The psychology and the one per cent wins is something that in my early days playing for the Wallabies we didn’t quite have but we learnt that and we built that as a team,” Roff told AAP.

“Eddie will bring that edge, that psychological edge to the game.

“We know that playing against the Pumas, he’s coaching against his old friend Michael Cheika and let’s hope the acoustics in the respective coaches’ boxes are strong because there will be plenty of noise and rivalry between those two old friends and foes.

“And this is what Eddie is great at. He’s never backward in putting a strong and confident step forward and players will feel that and it will rub off on them.

“There’s no question about the talent that is in this team and it’s about building the combinations and the winning momentum and so these Test matches early on are going to be an exciting opportunity to get that momentum started.”

Golden era loading?

Roff was a member of one of the greatest Australian sides that won the World Cup in 1999 and one of the few to hold the Bledisloe Cup – a trophy the Wallabies have not won since 2002.

With the World Cup later this year, the British & Irish Lions tour in 2025 and hosting the 2027 World Cup, Roff underlined the “strong national agenda” to get back to winning ways.

“I had the great honour of being in the change room when we held the Bledisloe Cup and when we held the Rugby World Cup and I feel like it’s a dam that’s about to burst,” Roff said.

“Not only with the fact that we have the Rugby World Cup and we’ve always performed well in the northern hemisphere.

“We have the Lions coming (in 2025) and we have a home World Cup in a few years (2027).

“There’s a strong recruitment drive, there’s a strong national agenda and approach to what we’re doing.

“So it’s an exciting time to be a part of it.”

The Wallabies’ first Test is against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld on July 8 in the Rugby Championship.

Challenge Cup: Glasgow Warriors to ‘reset their bodies’ for final after URC exit

Click:micro star sensor

Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith is looking for his team to refresh ahead of their Challenge Cup final after being knocked out of the United Rugby Championship.

Smith’s side crashed out of the URC at the hands of Munster, who beat the Scottish side 14-5 at the weekend after a first-half red card to fly-half Tom Jordan took its toll on the clash.

Rest time

Despite the disappointment, Smith has chosen to look on the bright side, which is the additional time his team has to prepare for their Challenge Cup final against Toulon on May 19.

Smith underlined that the Warriors went all in for the Munster clash but will now use the rest period to their advantage.

“In all honesty, to ask these boys to play in two finals, from where we are in year one, would have been a huge task. Now, in retrospect, obviously not before,” he said.

“We were all in to win this, there was no talk about taking our foot off the pedal.

“But now we are going to be smart about it. We probably won’t train until way later this week.

“We are going to use the rest days in our benefit. There will be four or five days where we reset the bodies and get their minds liberated a little bit.

Looking to finish on a high

“I could sense in the dressing room there is so much determination to finish this season on a high.

“I am looking forward to making a proper plan for Toulon and then with freshly-recovered bodies to

see if we can go and bring something back.”

The Challenge Cup showpiece game will be the club’s first European final and is an impressive feat in Smith’s first season at the helm.

Toulon will present a huge challenge for the Scottish side, who will want nothing more than to lift the title.

Tottenham decide not to activate Clinton N’Jie clause

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have decided not to activate a clause in their complex arrangement with Marseille that would allow them to recall Cameroonian international Clinton N’Jie, according to L’Équipe.

There was an automatic buy-clause in their loan agreement with Marseille for Clinton N’Jie last summer, which OM have had to act on, but there was also a clause that allowed THFC to take N’Jie back if they decided he was worth it which would have over-ruled Marseille’s automatic buy clause.

THFC have decided not to activate that and N’Jie will remain a Marseille player.

England have confirmed the appointment of scrum coach Tom Harrison, who will join up with the squad from Leicester Tigers on June 1.

The announcement of Harrison’s deal completes Steve Borthwick’s coaching team for the Rugby World Cup, which kicks off in France later this year.

Harrison is assistant coach at Leicester Tigers, leading on scrum coaching. He started in their academy programme, before joining the first team coaching staff for the 2020/21 season. He was part of the team that won the Premiership in 2021/22.

Tony Roques also handed role

Tony Roques, England men’s sevens head coach, will also work with the team as contact and skills coach during the preparation and training camps.

Roques represented his country at England Sevens, before moving into coaching. He has worked with USA Rugby and Team GB at the 2021 Olympic Games. Roques also worked with the England squad ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

It is also confirmed that Richard Wigglesworth will lead the attack coaching and kicking strategy, while Kevin Sinfield will continue his work as defence coach. Wigglesworth will join up with England at the end of the Premiership season, alongside Aled Walters who will be head of strength and conditioning.

Borthwick said: “I am very pleased to confirm the England coaching team for the Rugby World Cup.

“Tom is an excellent coach and will have a real impact in an area that will be fundamental to us as a team.

“Leicester’s scrum is renowned across Europe and Tom has played a leading role in that success. I have full confidence in him and I am very happy that he will be joining England.”

He added: “Tony has an extensive background in Sevens and is an experienced, specialist contact and skills coach. Individual skill emphasis will be an important part of our work.

“Having worked alongside him in the 2019 campaign, I know what a good coach he is and he will really contribute to the team.

“Richard has a proven track record as a player and a player coach, and you can see what an excellent job he has done as head coach of Leicester Tigers in the past few months.

“He has played at Rugby World Cups and has coaching experience in 2019, and understands the unique demands of the tournament and the support that players need. He knows a lot of the players very well and will bring different insights to the coaching team.

Coaching team now complete

“Along with Kevin and Aled, I am pleased with the balance and wide range of experience that the coaching staff will have.

“As a group, we know each other well and we know the areas we will focus on to continue developing and building this team and be the best prepared team that we can be.

“We know this World Cup will be highly competitive, but we are genuinely excited by what this group of coaches and players can achieve in France.”

Roques will keep oversight of the GB Sevens programme while working with the England men’s team.

England’s first preparation camps will start in mid-June as they begin work ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. They will face Argentina, Japan, Chile and Samoa in Pool D.

As part of their preparation, Borthwick’s side will take part in four Summer Series fixtures. England will first travel to Cardiff to face Wales on Saturday, August 5 in the first of a double-header. Twickenham will host the return fixture on Saturday, August 12.

England will then play Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, August 19 before their final game at Twickenham against Fiji on Saturday, August 26.

WATCH: Iosefo Masi’s superb offload in Fijian Drua’s victory over Hurricanes

Fijian Drua outside centre Iosefo Masi caught the eye with an outstanding offload in the build-up to a try in his side’s 27-24 win over the Hurricanes in their Super Rugby Pacific clash in Suva on Saturday.

With the score 10-7 in the Hurricanes’ favour, the Drua launched an attack from a scrum inside their opponents’ 22. After setting up another phase through Kalaveti Ravouvou, Frank Lomani found Masi with a long pass close to the Hurricanes’ try-line.

Masi still had plenty of work to do but did brilliantly to draw in three defenders before freeing his arms to offload to the on-rushing Taniela Rakuro, who cantered in for the try.

Lomani slotted the conversion to give the home side a deserved 14-10 lead and set up a tense finish against their more fancied opponents. Earlier, Rakuro opened the scoring for the Drua with a well-taken converted try in the 18th minute before Julian Savea touched down for a five-pointer for the visitors on the half-hour mark, which meant the Drua held a slender 7-5 lead at half-time.

The Hurricanes drew first blood shortly after the restart when the former All Black wing crossed the whitewash again – a momentous score as it drew him level with former Wallabies and Waratahs full-back Israel Folau as Super Rugby’s all-time record of 60 tries.

Rakuro then went over for his second five-pointer before the Hurricanes struck back via converted tries from Xavier Numia and Du’Plessis Kirifi which gave them a 24-14 lead midway through the half.

That would be the last time they would score points, however, as the Drua upped the ante on attack and were rewarded with a Meli Derenalagi try which Kemu Valetini converted.

That narrowed the gap to three points but the Drua finished stronger and sealed their victory courtesy of two well-taken penalties from Valetini in the game’s closing stages.

Challenge Cup: Franco Smith says reaching first final ‘means a lot’ for Glasgow Warriors

Glasgow Warriors boss Franco Smith was proud after the club reached their first European final courtesy of a 35-17 triumph over the Scarlets in Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final in Llanelli.

The Warriors are set to face the winner of the other semi-final between Toulon and Benetton in Dublin on May 19.

Deserved winners

As the scoreline suggests, Smith‘s charges were deserved winners as a brace of tries from Stafford McDowall and further five-pointers from George Horne, Rory Darge and Johnny Matthews helped them to seal their spot in the showpiece event.

Horne finished with a 15-point haul after slotting five conversions as the Warriors came back from a 14-7 half-time deficit.

“It means a lot to them. Everyone is very excited around that,” Glasgow head coach Smith said.

“But we know there are still a lot of learnings to take from this, a lot of improvement to be made. We have the ability, we have the skillset – we just need to now use the lessons learnt from this week better.

“The talk at half-time was about settling down. Even some of our internationals were just a little bit too nervous, which shows what this means to them.

“They didn’t want to lose tonight, and I thought we started off so well, but we got a little bit jittery.

“We calmed it down at half-time. The plan didn’t change. The plan was specific for this week and I thought we stuck to that even though Scarlets did extremely well to unsettle us and rattle us.

“Their line-speed from a defence perspective was very good, and we didn’t manage to get out of our half for various reasons, but it was important to show some resilience before the end.

“It’s about managing the emotional intelligence during the game and going into the next big challenge.”

Glasgow will now turn their focus to a United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Scotstoun against Munster on Saturday, while the Scarlets’ season has come to an end.

Steff Evans scored the Welsh region’s only try against Glasgow with their other points coming via the boot of Sam Costelow, who succeeded with four penalties.

Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel said: “I thought at half-time it was an even contest and we were right in it.

“We just didn’t manage to get over the line in their 22. They held us out, and we shifted the ball to the edge but got bundled into touch twice, which is disappointing.

“I can’t fault the effort of our boys. I thought we were right in the game.

Injuries proved costly

“We had three head injury assessments in the first 20 minutes, which is unheard of really. To lose all three, and then to lose Vaea Fifita as well is difficult.

“I think that definitely hurt us later on in the game, because they were bringing on fresh bodies and we didn’t manage to get the fresh legs on.

“But in saying that, I thought they did a job in the areas we thought. They were strong in set-piece and they managed to grind that one out in that respect.”
