Lyon will meet with Memphis Depay to begin contract extension negotiations

L’Équipe report that Ligue 1 side Lyon will shortly meet with their star player Memphis Depay to begin contract extension negotiations with him, just days after he ruptured his ACL in a league-season ending injury.

Lyon President Aulas will not let this reality get in the way of him locking down their key player this season, whose current deal expires in 2021. JMA likes to show the players that mean the most to him their value, especially in times of personal struggle.

He famously extended the contract of Claudio Caçapa in January 2005 when the player suffered a similarly bad knee injury.

Aulas and Memphis have a unique relationship. The former likes Depay’s talent and he has a soft spot for his personality. The Dutchman in return knows what Lyon as a club have done for him, picking him back up again for €16m when he was at his lowest after a failed move to Manchester United.

Even during testing moments, when Depay was letting his fiery personality get the better of him or was on a bad run of form, Aulas has always stood by his side. This was not the case of the Manchester United board when the Dutchman was with the Red Devils.

Thanks to Depay, OL are through to the Champions’ League Round of 16, with the player scoring 5 goals in 5 matches. Since Nabil Fékir’s departure to Real Betis, Depay is the undisputed key man, with Rudi Garcia confirming this to the rest of the world by recently making the ex-PSV player club captain.

For Depay, a contract extension would be a safety net. The truth is that nobody knows whether they will play to the same level again after an ACL injury. It would give him the security. At the moment, both parties agree on the principle that this situation needs sorting out, one way or another.

However, the early signs are promising for Lyon in their desire to extend Depay’s contract – both have the same idea in mind. Depay, who had initially wanted to leave at the end of this season, would stay for another 12 months with a likely slightly improved salary and the chance to prove to the rest of European football that his ACL injury is not career-path altering. Lyon would get to keep a star player for another campaign and ensure that they don’t lose him for nothing the following summer. The question of salary may take some time, but unfortunately Depay and his representatives have a lot of that right now…

Lyon have begun negotiations with Villarreal for Karl Toko Ekambi

L’Équipe report this morning that Ligue 1 side Lyon, in their quest to sign an attacker to fill the gaps left by the ACL injuries to Memphis Depay and Jeff Reine-Adélaïde, have begun negotiations with Villarreal over the possible signing of Cameroonian international attacker Karl Toko-Ekambi.

OL like his profile because of his ability to play across the attacking positions and Head of Scouting Florian Maurice has been watching the player closely for the last 18 months. This time though, the Lyon board has decided to take concrete action and has entered into discussions with their Spanish colleagues.

Villarreal are not entirely closed off to the idea of doing a deal – however, Lyon’s desire way of achieving this, through a loan with an option to buy, is not expected to go down well with the La Liga club’s board.

Sources with knowledge of the talks suggest that Villarreal want a permanent deal that sees them receive a fee greater than€20m.

Neymar hits back at journalist who questions PSG playing with 4 attackers after 3-3 draw with Monaco

Speaking in the mixed zone after PSG’s 3-3 draw with AS Monaco tonight, Brazilian superstar Neymar responded sharply to a question from a journalist about whether playing with four attackers (Neymar, Mbappé, Icardi & Di Marìa) hurts the balance of the team.

“We scored 3 goals. I think that it worked well. We have quality, we know it. I think you made a mistake with this question but I responded… This was a very difficult match. We knew that we were going to encounter difficulties because they have a good team, with quality. It was a good test. We are happy. This was not the best match of our season. We are going to improve each time to pull off a great campaign.”

Atletico Madrid are in active negotiations with PSG to sign Edinson Cavani this month

RMC Sport report that Spanish side Atletico Madrid are in active negotiations with PSG Sporting Director Leonardo about the possibility of signing Edinson Cavani this month, despite reportedly already having a pre-contract agreement with the Uruguayan for when he leaves the French capital at the end of his current deal in June.

The French outlet claims that Cavani’s agreement with Atletico is actually a 2.5 year contract which is only currently valid if he were to join them this month.

The Spanish club wants to beat competition from Chelsea and Manchester United, who are both interested in acquiring the 32-year-old on a free transfer in summer, by offering PSG a transfer fee to take him off their hands in January.

Talks to this effect are currently ongoing, but the Paris club does not want to let their highest goalscorer in club history leave in the middle of the season.

This is a newsflash for Cavani’s camp, because at the end of 2019, it was more the player who was really wanting to go to the end of his Paris contract. His lack of recent playing time had under Thomas Tuchel since convinced him to be open to the idea of a January departure.

RMC confirm Manchester United and Chelsea interest in Cavani, but as of yet only for the summer window.

Lyon & 2 Premier League sides approach Reims for Hassane Kamara

L’Équipe report that Lyon and 2 English sides have made contact with Ligue 1 side Reims over the possible January signing of left-sided player Hassane Kamara.

SDR are looking for at least €5m for a player contracted to them until 2021.

Reims have already rejected an offer from RCD Mallorca worth €3m for the player in recent hours, but are not closing the door to the player’s departure. It is expected that the other three sides in the race will show their hand shortly.

18:25 CET: The same outlet has since learned that Ligue 1 side Reims have now rejected a second proposal, from an unnamed Premier League side, worth €5m.

This is certainly not the end of the story…

The Spaniards are waiting for the final week of the window before making a formal proposal – ASM don’t intend to separate themselves from the teenager this month, but the club’s representatives are not completely closed off to a discussion, as under Robert Moreno it looks likely that Badiashile will not receive consequential playing time.

VCF are willing to offer up to €25m for the Frenchman this month, which is likely to fall short of the asking price of up to €50m that Badiashile was fetching already last summer.

Adama Diakhaby will join Nottingham Forest on loan with an option to buy tomorrow

L’Équipe confirm reporting from Sky Sports earlier today that 23-year-old French striker Adama Diakhaby will shortly complete a loan with option to buy move to fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest from Huddersfield Town.

Sabri Lamouchi’s discourse was enough to convince Diakhaby to join Forest’s promotion push over other offers including one from Ligue 1 side Amiens.

Diakhaby is due to arrive in Nottingham tomorrow to undergo a medical ahead of the move.

The player’s entourage insists that PSG are lying and that Cavani has no injury, despite Les Parisiens announcing that he had a groin problem and this was why he missed out on the midweek trip to AS Monaco and will also be absent against FC Lorient tomorrow.

The player wants to leave this month for Atleti, but PSG are remaining true to their word & blocking his exit until the summer, with many on the board feeling that the Uruguayan international has an important role to play in the second half of this campaign.
