Neymar has not asked to leave PSG, nor do the club want to sell him

As reported by RMC, despite reports suggesting otherwise, PSG’s Brazilian forward Neymar has not asked to leave Paris after being booed and whistled by PSG fans during the win over Bordeaux on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the outlet says, the 30-year-old is not one of the players earmarked to be sold in the summer as others in the French media had reported earlier this week.

Neymar, however, is nevertheless said to be deeply upset by the treatment he and Lionel Messi received at the Parc des Prince on Sunday after the loss to Real Madrid and subsequent exit from the Champions League, the manner of which infuriated PSG fans.

The forward doesn’t see how he can be held responsible for the defeat and his trip back to Barcelona after the game on Sunday was an attempt to get some space from Paris and spend his day off away from the French capital, rather than being any signal of intent.

Both club and player will take their time, say RMC, before making any decisions in reaction to the loss to Madrid.

PSG ultras release statement: “The club’s current situation requires complete reorganisation at all levels”

Following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League collapse on Wednesday night, the club’s ultra group, the Collectif Ultras Paris, have released a strong statement on Twitter detailing their frustrations with the club. They have confirmed they will stage manifestations during the Ligue 1 fixture against Bordeaux.

The statement:

The unacceptable and inevitable disillusion that we feared and foresaw has unfortunately been realised.

How can you have this mindset that moves mountains when your season seems to begin in February and you play domestic competitions at a senatorial pace?

How can you have a genuine game plan when your squad is nothing but a bunch of ‘stars’ who barely compliment one another?

How can a coach be the respected boss of the changing room when he is manifestly not the true decision maker?

How can you regenerate a squad when endless subs can happily see out their contracts with such comfortable salaries?

How can you feel the immutable force of the history of your club when their colours alternate between black, fuchsia, pink, yellow…?

How can you want to change everything for the people of Paris when you settle for waving to them from the penalty spot and when you’re more often seen at Fashion Week than at a meeting with the representatives of your own fans?

We don’t have a short memory. We know what our return owes to President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi but it is clear he is not the man for the job. The club’s current situation requires complete reorganisation at all levels going forward and the daily presence of its president.

Our Paris Saint-Germain deserves people who serve it, not people who are served by it. Against Bordeaux on Sunday, we will show our displeasure and we ask everyone who loves this club, who will be present, to unite with our non-violent action.

We will remain mobilised until genuine, large-scale changes have been made. We do it in the greater interest of a club, not a brand, not a marketing product, OUR CLUB! Allez Paris.

PLAYER RATINGS | Brest 1-4 Marseille – no Payet, no problem for OM

Ligue 1 21/22, Round 28 – 13/3/22

MARSEILLE – 4 (Gerson 3, Milik 63, Harit 71, Ünder 92)

Pau López, 5

Pol Lirola, 3

William Saliba, 7 – An assured away display from the Arsenal loanee at a tricky ground to visit. Typically serene and commanding, he had no trouble handling Brest’s forward line and he calmed and expertly used the ball and covered for his teammates all game.

Boubacar Kamara, 6

Leonardo Balerdi, 5

Sead Kolašinac, 5

Pape Gueye, 8 – An excellent all-round display. He repeatedly and boldly won the ball back in midfield before using it simply to start attacks while his long passing was also intelligent and progressive too if not always totally accurate but he did well to charge on and join attacks.

Mattéo Guendouzi, 7 – This was a marked improvement on some average recent displays, his passing was more positive and, in the first half especially, he broke forward with typical aggression to the frustration of the opposition. A nuisance all game.

Gerson, 8 – He tucked away the first having broken, as he did all game, incisively from midfield as his increased intensity, sorely lacking during the first half of the season, again gave OM an added verve to match his obvious quality on the ball.

Amine Harit, 7 – His problem all season long has been his similarity to Dimitri Payet, not his lack of quality which he proved here in a slippery and waspish display in supporting Milik. It was his corner that assisted the second and he was on hand to tap home the third. His six shot-creating actions was the game’s most.

Arkadiusz Milik, 7 – His resurgence continues. He did well to slip Gerson in for the opener early on and lead the line with power throughout. A brilliant stooped header from Harit’s corner made it 2-0.

Others: Ünder 6, Bakambu 6, Rongier 5, Ćaleta-Car 4, Peres 5.

BREST – 1 (Cardona 91)

Marco Bizot, 3

Jean-Kevin Duverne, 4

Lilian Brassier, 3

Dénys Bain, 3

Jere Uronen, 4

Haris Belkebla, 5

Hugo Magnetti, 5

Franck Honorat, 5

Martin Satriano, 3

Youcef Belaïli, 4

Jérémy Le Douaron, 4

Others: Cardona 6, Mounie 4, Del Castillo 4, Agoume 5.

Ukrainian flags will now be permitted during game between Lille and Chelsea

As reported by L’Équipe, Ukrainian flags will now be permitted during tonight’s Champions League second leg match between Lille and Chelsea held at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. This had not been the case up until today, with the intention being to avoid the “politicisation” of the ground.

This falls more in line with Lille’s gestures before their game against Saint-Étienne on Friday night, when the club organised a collection of necessary products for war victims in Ukraine. The players also wore shirts that had the phrase “united for peace” written onto the back in yellow and blue. These shirts were then put up for auction, with the proceeds going to the same cause.

Rudi Garcia wants Lyon return

In speaking with an interview with Le Figaro, former Lyon, Lille, Marseille and Roma coach Rudi Garcia stated his desire to return to OL, after his departure at the end of last season, should the chance ever arise. Garcia explained:

“Honestly, I would’ve stayed with Lyon. I don’t want to talk about the past too much but what I can say is that I have no regrets. Despite the negative feelings of some supporters, if Lyon came back for me tomorrow, I’d go back there right away.”

HOT TAKE | Jorge Sampaoli is the best Marseille coach since Didier Deschamps but he needs time

Click:paver block making machine

Since Didier Deschamps left Marseille in 2012 after a three year spell that included the 2009/10 Ligue 1 title, only Rudi Garcia has lasted longer than 18 months as OM coach. André Villas-Boas is the next longest serving manager since Deschamps and his spell included five months without a game due to the pandemic.

In that time, Marseille coaches have often followed a familiar pattern of initial promise which quickly fades amid a toxic atmosphere and unrealistic expectations, usually amped up by a poor run of form. Eventually, the club implodes under the pressure it exerts upon itself from all sides.

Jorge Sampaoli recently passed his first anniversary as OM coach and the pressure is starting to build right on cue. However, after years of waiting through failed coaching appointments, Sampaoli represents a real chance for Marseille fans and hiercahy to finally get the team and style they want. All they need to do is leave him to it.

Sampaoil is often accused of over complicating tactics and constantly changing plans, by players and club president Pablo Longoria as well as fans. But, considering this season’s high watermarks such a the controlling win at Lens or the riotous gung-ho rout of Angers, that seems like an odd criticism given the uninspired and functional football under previous coaches which often relied on Florian Thauvin’s magic.

Missteps, like the dire recent home defeat to Monaco, are to be expected given Sampaoli’s mad-scientist approach – especially after just one year in the job which hasn’t yet included a full season. While his belligerence and passion make him a perfect fit for OM, Sampaoli has proven he’s capable of giving the the club what it so desperately desires – an attacking, tactically nuanced, spirited team capable of out-outmanoeuvring strong opponents.

Manchester City finished third and 15 points adrift in Pep Guardiola’s first campaign. The end of next season is the time to judge Sampaoli. With his squad still taking shape and his complicated, modern ideas still taking hold, the Argentine coach still has the best points per game (1.85) of any Marseille coach since the mid-nineties, making questions over his future, in any rational terms, utterly preposterous. This is OM’s best chance at real success in a decade. If things fall apart again, they’ll only have their own paranoia to blame.

Burak Yılmaz among players to leave Lille at end of season

L’Équipe report today that a host of players are set to leave Lille at the end of their contracts this season, among which Turkish striker Burak Yılmaz.

The 36-year-old has been at the club for two seasons and played a key role in last year’s title win, but his current wages are no longer compatible with the club’s recent financial restraints.

Portuguese pair José Fonte and Xeka are also reaching the end of their deals. The defender – who is club captain – stated in January that he was waiting for a sign from the club management in order to stay. The midfielder, on the other hand, has said that he is likelier to leave than to remain with Les Dogues.

Other players on the list include winter arrival Hatem Ben Arfa, who joined on a six-month deal, as well as Jérémy Pied, while goalkeeper Ivo Grbić is expected to return to his parent club, Atlético Madrid, having lost his place as a starter for LOSC.

Leonardo still in the dark over his future at PSG

As reported by Foot Mercato, PSG sporting director Leonardo is still in the dark over his future at the club and is continuing to work as usual on summer transfer targets regardless.

With a significant overhaul likely at PSG in response to their latest Champions League capitulation, this time to Real Madrid, much like manager Mauricio Pochettino, sporting director Leonardo is expected by some in the French media to be pushed out ahead of next season.

However, Leonardo is, for now, fully involved in the club’s restructuring say the outlet and is yet to be informed over if he will remain at the Parc des Princes next season by the club’s Qatari owners with several other sporting directors approached over the position in recent times.

Didier Deschamps leaves door open to France return for Dimitri Payet and Steve Mandanda

In an interview with Marseille-based paper La Provence, France manager Didier Deschamps has opened the door to a return to the national team for Dimitri Payet and Steve Mandanda.

The playmaker has been absent from the team since 2018, but his recent good form for OM has seen calls for his return. The former Marseille manager also indicates that the veteran goalkeeper, who has lost his starting spot this season, could also make a comeback with Les Bleus in the future.

“At one point, he had an important role, a decisive one even. Other players have [emerged] since. In the same vein as Steve [Mandanda], he can still be called up.”

“When I say that, people will think I’m not saying anything and that I’ll never take that kind of player back. But it does mean something. It depends on the situation.”

“[On Mandanda] The France team is the consequence of what happens in club football. Unfortunately for him, these days he’s not playing much.”
