As reported by L’Équipe earlier today last season’s amateur Coupe de France semi-finalists, FC Versailles, will play their home matches at Stade Jean-Bouin – the home stadium of famous Parisian-based Rugby side Stade Français. 

Located next to Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes, the newly-promoted National 1 side will play in the 20,000 capacity stadium in the third tier next season. The club has found a solution to play home games next season, with Stade Montbouron not being able to play games at night because of a UNESCO ruling that prevents a stadium so close to the Palace of Versailles to use floodlights. 

Stade Jean Bouin is starting to gain a reputation as a back-up stadium for Parisian football teams that progress up the football pyramid quickly but not with the necessary infrastructures in place to play. It has been home to fellow Parisian outfit Red Star FC in 2016-17 for one Ligue 2 season, and the Paris Saint-Germain Féminin team have played all their home matches there since 2018. 

Also in the National 1 are Paris 13 Athletico, who will also have to move away from their home ground due to regulation issues at the start of season. They will play at Paris FC’s Stade Charléty for the first few home games of the 22-23 season.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal’s French international defender William Saliba won’t be loaned out by the London club again next season after two years on loan with Nice and Marseille in Ligue 1.

After a successful spell with OM this season for the 21-year-old, which saw him win the UNFP’s young player of the season award, another loan for the player had been reported as a possibility as he looks to make the France squad for November’s World Cup, with Marseille keen to keep the player for another year.

However, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta now plans to integrate the defender into his first-team with Romano reporting that the club now ‘trust’ the player while confirming that the Premier League side are keen to discuss a new contract for the centre-back. Only a ‘crazy’ bid would change Arsenal’s mind over the player’s future, which would seem to end Marseille’s hopes of re-signing Saliba, even if the French side are prepared to commit to a €30m move.

Atlético Madrid, Leicester, Napoli and Newcastle have all also enquired for Saliba of late.

Paris Saint-Germain have announced their first major signing of the summer, as Porto’s Vitinha (22) joins the club for a €40m fee – the former Wolves loanee joining the Parisian side on a permanent 5-year deal after undergoing a medical earlier today in the capital. 

The 22-year-old has made 47 appearances in all competitions for FC Porto, including 36 as a starter. He scored four goals and provided three assists. A deal was struck last week for the Portuguese international, who becomes compatriot Luis Campos’ first signing since his arrival as sporting advisor earlier this month.

PSG recently triggered Porto’s €40m release clause for the midfielder, which meant he was free to negotiate with the club. This confirms the Parisian’s first summer signing under incoming manager Christophe Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos’s partnership at PSG. More deals are expected to be concluded in the near future, as PSG have already agreed deals in principle with Milan Skriniar, Renato Sanches, and Gianluca Scamacca – as per sources contacted by GFFN yesterday evening. 

Porto have indicated that the exact fee of the transfer will be €41.525m, while the Portuguese club will pay the €4m agent fees included in the transfer themselves.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports this afternoon that Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer is Nice’s priority signing for the number one spot, as the club looks to replace Walter Benítez after the Argentine’s departure for PSV Eindhoven.

The Borussia Mönchengladbach man would be joining his compatriot and former manager at the Bundesliga club Lucien Favre, whose return to Les Aiglons was recently made official following the departure of Christophe Galtier for Paris Saint-Germain.

Sommer has been with the German side since 2014, and made 323 appearances to date, with his contract expiring at the end of next season.

Nice have already triggered the permanent option in Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bułka’s loan move from PSG this past season, with the former Chelsea man now expected to stay on as deputy in the position as the club look to sign a number one. 

The Ligue 1 side have also been linked with a move for Kepa Arrizabalaga, with the Spanish goalkeeper falling out of favour at Chelsea amid the emergence of Edouard Mendy. Les Aiglons were interested in potential loan deal, although it was unclear whether Kepa himself was interested in moving to Ligue 1 amid interest from Spain and Italy as well.

Italian forward Pietro Pellegri (21) has completed a permanent move from AS Monaco to Serie A side Torino after joining the Italians on loan in January. 

During that time he scored 9 goals and has scored once as Torino went on to finish 10th in their domestic division. In the first half of the season, he was loaned to AC Milan where he made six appearances but failed to score. 

His loan to Torino did include a €7m buy option, although it is unclear as to whether that is the final fee. Sporting director Paul Mitchell last week said, “Pietro was at Torino and they want to try and find an agreement to obtain his services. We’re in positive discussions, but nothing is concluded.” It therefore seems likely that the fee is lower than the aforementioned €7m buy option. 

Pellegri has struggled at Monaco since arriving for a reported €25m from Genoa back in 2018. Injuries have restricted him to just 23 appearances and he has scored just twice in that period.

Harlequins boss Tabai Matson was pleased to come away with a 14-10 win against Racing 92 in the Champions Cup but was not satisfied with his team’s performance.

The weather conditions were especially tricky, with heavy rain turning the contest into a tight clash at Twickenham Stoop that saw an Andre Esterhuizen try as the difference on the day.

Failed to capitalise

Matson, however, was upset his side could not make the most of their numerical advantage after Racing star Kition Kamikamica was sent off with half an hour to play.

The coach feels his team were tactically off at times during the game and admitted there would be a big review so Quins can learn from their mistakes.

“It wasn’t the prettiest and we were probably lucky, to be fair. We did our best to ruin that. The conditions were poor but we made some poor calls,” Matson said.

“For all that, we’re back in the hunt for the knockout stage again after getting the four points. Getting the win was the most important thing, but there’s lot to review on Tuesday.

“We’ve got lots to review, we tried to play way too much and that’s a good learning for us at this time of year because at the end of December there’s more of that type of rugby to come.

“Ultimately we move forward in Europe and that’s the key thing.”

Dealt well with the threatening Russell

Quins did exceptionally well to minimise the influence of Racing’s Scottish fly-half Finn Russell, but Matson still had praise for the world-class playmaker.

“We knew that he would be a key guy because he can control the ball really well. It wasn’t really an attacking game but a lot of their territory battle is won by him,” he said.

“He still had a great game, even in these conditions. The old Scots know how to put the ball behind you! He did a really good job but we cornered him a couple of times.”

Russell has been linked to a move to Bath, but the pivot quickly poured cold water on the speculation.

PSV Eindhoven have announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons on a permanent, five-year deal,  with the 19-year-old leaving Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

As initially reported by Le Parisien and confirmed by sources contacted by Get French Football News, the two clubs have entered into a side deal which includes a buy-back clause despite the apparent free transfer.

RMC Sport add that Simons was looking to extend with PSG and the club wanted him to stay on, but the Eredivisie side wanted to have the midfielder under contract. The Ligue 1 champions instead have a €4m buy-back clause at the end of the season.

The former Barcelona man leaves the French capital – for now – after three years at the club. This season, he made nine appearances under Mauricio Pochettino, as he sought to compete with PSG’s more experienced midfield options for a place in the squad.

L’Équipe reported during Corentin Tolisso’s first press conference since rejoining the club that Alexandre Lacazette was involved in convincing the player to return to Lyon. Tolisso rejoined his formative club yesterday on a five-year deal after a five year spell at Bayern Munich. 

During the press conference the player spoke about his relationship to Alexandre Lacazette and how he played a key role in the transfer:

“I’ve been talking to Alex a lot. To tell you the truth, I think he messaged me more in the last month than he has in the last five years! (laughs) But I also spoke a lot with Anthony Lopes. Alex has played a big role, he’s really a friend for me outside football. The fact that he was there was an extra asset in my decision. Whatever happens, I had the desire and the ambition to come back to Lyon, I just didn’t know when. It’s happened now, but I’ve always had this desire.”

Tolisso spent five years at the current German champions, but despite injury issues blighting most of his time in Bavaria, the player ended up making a century of appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals and assisting 15.

Argentine rugby players have been sharing how they celebrated their country winning the FIFA World Cup on social media.

The Argentines have been terrorising their French clubmates while others have simply pitched up to training in donning their country’s colours.

The French suffer

France players will have been holding their breath during the penalty shootouts on Sunday evening as many of them had more than just national pride on the line.

After losing a bet with clubmate Bautista Delguy, Clermont and France winger Damian Penaud was forced to wear a classy Argentina jersey today.

As reported by L’Équipe during the manager’s first press conference, Paulo Fonseca affirmed his intention to build an “ambitious team” at Lille which “plays attractive football”. The new Lille boss has signed a 2-year contract with LOSC, and during his first press conference gave a clear idea of the kind of identity that the Northern club will strive to create next season. 

The former AS Roma man said: “I am an offensive coach, I want the team to take the initiative, to dominate, to go forward, to control the ball. I want the team to be aggressive when we don’t have the ball or when we lose it.”

The former centre-back arrived in the north of France yesterday to visit the club’s training ground, and is set to oversee his first training session with Les Dogues on Friday.

The 49-year-old’s first job outside of Portugal was a three-year stint with Shakhtar Donetsk, which notably saw his team beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City away in the Champions League. His two seasons in Serie A saw him finish fifth and then seventh with AS Rom.

Fonseca, who was back in Kyiv when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began earlier this year, now returns to management after a year out with what is expected to be a two-year contract with the 2020/21 Ligue 1 title winners.
