Marko says Aston Martin engine rumor ‘makes no sense’

Helmut Marko has rubbished suggestions that Mercedes is supplying its best power units to customer Aston Martin, a rumor that “makes no sense” said the Red Bull motorsport chief.

Aston Martin has emerged as a genuine top-three contender in F1 this season thanks to the remarkable performance of it AMR23 which outpaced all but Red Bull’s car in Bahrain where Fernando Alonso finished third behind Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

The Silverstone-based outfit’s impressive form coupled with Mercedes’ troubles and its admission that wins will be hard to come by in the first half of the season have given birth to comments claiming that the German manufacturer is now purposefully favouring its customer Aston Martin.

But Marko insists the claims are simply senseless.

“Why should Mercedes make a competitor stronger?” the Austrian told F1 Insider. “That makes no sense.

“Despite working together, Aston Martin is ultimately a competitor to Mercedes in terms of passenger cars.

“Mercedes will now do everything it can to forget the disappointing season opener for them as soon as possible. With this ambitious task, there is certainly no room to help Aston Martin.”

As a reminder, Formula 1’s technical regulations require that power unit manufacturers supply the same specification of hardware to all customers, a compelling point that wasn’t lost on AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost.

“The rumours are nonsense,” added Tost. “The regulations clearly dictate to engine manufacturers that all customers must get the same material.

“And as far as I know, everyone sticks to that very meticulously. So a preference for a team is forbidden and unrealistic.”

Pirelli reveals quickest tyre option for Saudi Arabian GP.

Pirelli has done the math and the analysis to determine the optimal tyre strategy for Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The Jeddah Cornich Circuit – the fastest street circuit of the year – offers a medium level of grip but the sand blown onto the surface can influence this on the low-abrasion asphalt.

While Bahrain was all about traction and braking, Jeddah is predominantly about lateral force impacting the tyres.

Formula 1’s exclusive tyre supplier has chosen the same compound choices as last year at Jeddah, namely the C2 White hard, C3 Yellow medium and C4 Red soft.

“We saw an interesting qualifying with plenty of memorable moments,” commented Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola.

“The C4 also showed itself to be a very versatile tyre in the final session that determined the grid, both on a flying lap as well as over longer runs.

“Q1 demonstrated how it was possible to have a good level of grip also on the second and third attempts with the same set of tyres, using cool-down laps in between.

“The opportunity to have a tyre with these characteristics already presented itself on certain circuits last year, and we’ve seen that once more here today.”

Metz turn down Hamburg offer for defender William Mikelbrencis

According to L’Équipe, Ligue 2 side FC Metz have turned down an offer for young right-back Willam Mikelbrencis – who made eight appearances in Ligue 1 last season at the tender age of 18. Discussions are reportedly still underway between the two clubs – with the player wishing to make the move to Germany.

A current France U18 international, Mikelbrencis has started in all three of Metz’s opening games in Ligue 2 this season after being relegated from the top tier – featuring notably in a 3-0 win over Amiens on the opening day.

Last season the youngster made his breakthrough into the Metz senior side with eight appearances in Ligue 1, after having performed in Metz’s reserve side with 15 appearances and one goal to his name in the fourth tier of French football.

For Les Bleus, the defender has made eight appearances at France U18 level after featuring on four occasions for the U16s.

Tensions rise at PSG between Kylian Mbappé and Neymar

According to sources contacted by Get French Football News, tensions are rising between Kylian Mbappé and Neymar in the PSG dressing room.

Initially fast friends as both joined the club in 2017, amid bubbling tensions over the summer, Mbappé was keen for the Brazilian to be sold this transfer window, as has reportedly been the aim of the club this summer, with Paris offering the world record transfer to Manchester City.

Neymar, who’s hit good form this season so far, seemingly in reaction to reports the club wanted him out, is aware of reports detailing Mbappé’s desire to see him sold – Mbappé’s contract renewal has reportedly given him increased importance and status within the club and on decision making.

The personal relationship has broken down between the two forwards in the last six months and Mbappé’s camp feel there’s only room for two off Mbappé, Neymar and Lionel Messi on the pitch this season. Mbappé feels like he’s learned a lot from Neymar in the last five years but would now prefer to learn from Messi.

Norris reveals first Mercedes engine ‘is finished already’

Lando Norris has revealed that the first Mercedes engine installed in his McLaren “is finished already”, which leaves the Briton with the prospect of a grid penalty at some point this season.

Ferrari undertook precautionary engine changes on the cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz ahead of the start of this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

But Norris says the PU changes in the McLaren camp – which included a new ICE and fresh turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K elements – were unavoidable.

“I took a whole new engine because the other one is finished already,” Norris disclosed after Friday’s second practice session.

Norris, who concluded FP2 12th but just over a second adrift from pacesetter Max Verstappen, is hoping for better fortunes in Jeddah after a pneumatic pressure leak turned his opening race in Bahrain into a pitstop exercise for himself and his crews.

But a spot among the top-ten will require a lot of work this weekend given the extraordinary tightness of F1’s midfield.

“t’s close. I think me to last place was split between two-tenths, so if I made a little mistake I was in last place,” Norris acknowledged.

“It’s just very close, the midfield. Alpine are up the road on the whole midfield pack, so they’ve done more to their front. And even Williams seem a lot quicker than us too.

“It feels alright, to be honest, the car. I’m struggling a bit with overall balance but we’re just doing the best with what we’ve got.”

Verstappen and Perez blitz the field in FP3 in Jeddah

There was no disputing Red Bull’s hegemony in Saturday’s final practice session in Jeddah, with Max Verstappen concluding FP3 nearly one full second ahead of the field.

Verstappen edged teammate Sergio Perez by 0.613s, but Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin was 0.998s adrift, the Spaniard clocking in just ahead of his combative teammate Lance Stroll.

Completing the top five, Lewis Hamilton offered a bit of hope to Mercedes that the Brackley squad can lead the midfield charge in qualifying this evening.

Saudi Arabian GP Free Practice 3 – Results

Once again, the standard “irrelevant session” disclaimer applied to the final dress rehearsal before qualifying as the track conditions that will prevail this evening will be very different to those of FP2.

The weather was a bit overcast at the beginning of the afternoon but air temperatures were a toasty 27.2 °C, with track temps at 43 °C.

At the outset, the action was subdued out on the track as everyone took their time to kick into gear.
And the field was deprived of one runner with AlphaTauri’s Nyck de Vries sitting out the session due to a Honda power unit change at the back of the Dutchman’s AT04.

As the big guns joined the muted action, things finally started to rev up, with Gasly and Russell successively topping the times until Verstappen – running on the hard tyre – took control

But the Dutchman’s time at the top was short-lived as he was promptly knocked down to second by Perez by 0.132s.

Behind the leading Red Bull duo, Alpine’s Gasly upheld his team’s form from Friday while edging Hamilton in fourth.

Pressing on, Perez and Verstappen both improved, with the latter leapfrogging the Mexican to recoup the top spot with a 0.371s lead. Behind, Hamilton seized P3, but well behind Verstappen.

But a strong effort by Stroll on the softs with 10 minutes to go carried the Canadian to third. But as Aston showed its hand, Alonso would have none of it, the two-time world champion recapturing third. However, the gulf to Red Bull was a massive 0.998s!

Behind the Red Bull/Aston top four, Hamilton rounded off the top five while Charles Leclerc was heading towards a sub-top 10 result when he improved to P6.

McLaren’s pace improved markedly in FP2, with Norris and Piastri clocking in P7 and P8, just ahead of Gasly and Sainz who completed the top-ten.

In P11, Russell led the second half of the field that included both Alfa Romeo, Haas cars, Alpine’s Ocon, the two Williams and the pair of AlphaTauri’s that closed out the field.

Sarah Hunter: England women’s captain one of four nominated for Rugby Union Writers’ Club personality of the year award

England women’s captain Sarah Hunter features on the list of nominees for the Rugby Union Writers’ Club personality of the year for 2022.

Hunter became the most capped player in the English game when she eclipsed Rocky Clark’s milestone of 137 and by the end of the World Cup she had amassed 140 appearances.

The 37-year-old number eight also led England to a record 30-Test winning run that ended with a 34-31 defeat by hosts New Zealand in the final of the global showpiece two months ago.

If Hunter wins the vote, she will become the third woman to claim the prestigious Pat Marshall Memorial Award currently held by France scrum-half Antoine Dupont, following in the footsteps of Maggie Alphonsi and Emily Scarratt.

Referee, two Test coaches and a player up for the award

Joining her on the list of nominees for 2022 are two rugby league greats who have played influential roles in the success of Ireland and France, the year’s outstanding international sides.

Andy Farrell guided Ireland to the summit of the global rankings as head coach, in the process masterminding the nation’s first series victory in New Zealand.

Shaun Edwards, meanwhile, has helped transform Grand Slam winners France into 2023 World Cup favourites by adding steel to their defence as an assistant coach to Fabien Galthie. By the end of the year France had won all 13 of their Tests.

Completing the list of nominees is Wayne Barnes after he became only the second referee to oversee 100 Tests, joining Nigel Owens in the elite band of centurion officials. Barnes won the club’s special award in 2022.

The winner will be announced through the media and the RUWC’s social media accounts and will be honoured at their annual lunch on May 25.

Greats of the game whose names have been engraved on the winners’ trophy in the past include Gareth Edwards, Bill Beaumont, David Campese, Jonah Lomu, Martin Johnson, Jonny Wilkinson, Alphonsi, Brian O’Driscoll and Dan Carter.

Writers and broadcasters from the club’s 280 members have cast their votes for the Pat Marshall Memorial Award, which has been presented by the club every year since 1976.

The Rugby Union Writers’ Club was founded in January 1960 to further the interests of its members – drawn mainly from the UK, but also from around the world – and the sport of rugby union.

Speaking to the press in the wake of his Paris Saint-Germain side’s 7-1 trouncing of Lille, Christophe Galtier was inevitably upbeat and praised his players’ selfless approach to the game.

His words transcribed by L’Équipe, the manager pointed to his teams’ togetherness and state of mind as the key to their success – especially in the wake of the tensions between Neymar and Kylian Mbappé last week, which he says were quickly put to bed by the first training session of the week.

Did you expect to be ready this early in the season?

Yes, with regard to the work that’s been done since July 4, and those who came back before the scheduled date, who had a good pre-season. I saw players who wanted to start the campaign strongly so I’m not surprised.

You changed the attacking set-up a bit, why?

The set-up changes with the presence of Kylian Mbappé [return from injury]. We’re trying to find the best balance possible. Leo, Kylian and Ney played like this last season but in a different formation. Tonight, they played for each other. Even when the game was decided, they tracked back and worked together. I enjoyed their desire to play together.

Do you admire when your players play like that?

Admire isn’t the right word. After our match against Montpellier I was voluntarily following all of the debates [“penaltygate”]. But I quickly felt in the first training session of the week that it was already behind us. We had a perfect week in terms of intensity and in the behaviour a team should have. I was waiting to see if that perfect week would give a perfect match. That turned out to be the case.

Official | Monaco’s Chrislain Matsima loaned to Lorient

AS Monaco defender Chrislain Matsima (20) has joined Ligue 1 rivals Lorient on loan for the 2022/23 season. The Breton club gave an option to buy the France U20 international at the end of the loan.

Matsima has come through the ranks at the Principality club and in the last two seasons, he has featured in 16 Ligue 1 fixtures, as well as three Europa League ties. However, with Benoît Badiashile, Guillermo Maripán, Axel Disasi and now Malang Sarr all ahead of him in the pecking order, he finds his route to first-team football blocked.

Speaking in a press release from the club, Matsima said, “I am very satisfied to be joining Lorient on loan, a club which is once again amongst the elite of French football. I have spent time in Ligue 1 with Monaco and this season I hope to earn game time within my new team and with my new teammates.”

He continued, “I will do my maximum to earn their confidence and show all of my qualities and therefore continue my progression to the highest level.”

Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes detail Jeddah upgrades

Formula 1’s three top teams arrived in Saudi Arabia this week with updates and new components in their crates, most of which are specific to Jeddah’s high-speed layout.

Red Bull is seeking to uphold the dominant form it displayed in Bahrain, although the team has warned that its RB19 likely won’t enjoy in Jeddah the edge it had at Sakhir.

As the circuit’s demands are better served with lower levels of downforce, Red Bull updates are centered around the RB19’s rear wing which features less cambered beam wing and rear wing elements as well as changes to the endplate geometry.
