Nantes considering move for Lyon’s Damien Da Silva

Fourteenth-placed Ligue 1 side FC Nantes are in the market for a centre-back following stalwart Nicolas Pallois’ knee injury. L’Equipe are reporting that the Loire-Atlantique outfit are considering a move for the out-of-favour Olympique Lyonnais defender Damien Da Silva.

The French 34-year-old joined Lyon from Stade Rennais 18 months ago on a two-year deal, but he failed to prove a key player as neither former OL manager Peter Bosz and incumbent Laurent Blanc seem to greatly rely on him.

Da Silva played only seven Ligue 1 games this season and he is now unlikely find more game time as Lyon signed experienced Croatian center-back Dejan Lovren (33) during this winter transfer window.

The question now is whether OL will cash in this month or allow Da Silva to run down the remainder of his contract. Ouest-France add that FC Nantes did consider a move for Da Silva, but the outlet believes the former Stade Rennais man reportedly favors a move abroad.

Meanwhile, FC Nantes’ manager Antoine Kombouaré has revealed that promising left-back Quentin Merlin (20) suffered a partial hamstring tear that will keep him on the sidelines for at least two months. The French U21 international will undergo surgery next Tuesday.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of Lyon’s home match against Strasbourg striker Alex Lacazette said that the team is having a difficult time because not all players seem to have confidence in themselves. The following was transcribed by RMC Sport.

Lacazette says despite working well during the week and communicating as a team, the players are struggling to transfer that to their performances in games “It is complicated, because we feel that not everyone is confident, we work well in the week in training but we cant do it during matches.”

Lyon’s top scorer then goes on to say “Every game is different. We improve some aspects of our play but then we drop in others. It’s inconsistent.” He believes that the only way to overcome this issue is to achieve a win and build on it with another, saying that “that’s the only cure.”

Lyon are currently eighth in Ligue 1 under new manager Laurent Blanc, who has reached the same amount of wins as his predecessor Peter Bosz in nine games (four) – with two draws and two losses to add to his record. Lacazette is currently Les Gones’ top scorer with ten goals.

Amateur French team watch Kylian Mbappé video before cup win over Ligue 1 side

In a day of Coupe de France action packed with giant-killings – Ligue 2 Rodez overturning a two-goal deficit to Monaco, Nice losing to third-tier Le Puy-en-Velay – it was Strasbourg Koenigshoffer who made the headlines as they saw off Clermont, a five-division gap separating the two.

The sixth-tier side held the top-flight outfit to a goalless draw before winning the penalty shootout. The Régional 1 side are the only team from Strasbourg left in the competition after their Ligue 1 neighbours were knocked out by Angers the day before.

A stoic defensive performance would fend off all of the attacks that were coming from an Auvergne side who were fresh off beating Lyon in league action.

As reported in this morning’s Téléfoot, the lower league side’s players watched a video of Kylian Mbappé before heading out onto the pitch – the World Cup top scorer’s words ostensibly having the desired effect for the club’s coaching staff.

The Toffees have submitted a bid worth €20m for the Burkina Faso international, with talks now ongoing between the two clubs.

Mohamed Toubache-Ter had indicated yesterday that the Breton side had also seen an offer come in from Leicester for a similar fee excluding bonuses, the Foxes’ bid having been turned down by Les Merlus. A third bid worth €17m has come in from an unnamed club in Germany, which has also been rejected.

Ouattara has been a key part of Lorient’s surprise run at the European spots this season, his five goals and five assists making him a crucial part of Régis Le Bris’ side that at one point in autumn was even outright second-placed behind PSG.

Official | Dango Ouattara completes Bournemouth move

Dango Ouattara (20) has completed his move from FC Lorient to Premier League side Bournemouth for a €27m, which includes €5m in bonuses.

The Burkina Faso international has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Cherries. The move was facilitated by Les Merlus’ integration into a multi-club structure, which includes Bournemouth. Bill Foley recently bought the English side and quickly added Lorient to the Black Knight Football and Entertainment enterprise. Foley bought has acquired a €33m stake in the club.

In a season of surpassed expectations at Lorient, Ouattara has been one of the standout stars. In 18 Ligue 1 games, the winger has six goals and six assists.

As a result of their success, Lorient are in danger of losing further assets this winter. Enzo Le Fée is also linked with a move to Bournemouth, however, as revealed by sources contacted by Get French Football News, the player himself is uninterested in a move, and hasn’t appreciated attempts made by certain stakeholders to attempt to move him in the direction of the Premier League club.

Terem Moffi, meanwhile, is heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 rivals OGC Nice. Les Aiglons yesterday submitted a third offer for the Nigerian striker.

Monaco strongly deny rumours of Vadim Vasilyev’s return to the club

Sources contacted by Get French Football News have strongly denied that Vadim Vasilyev is set to return to AS Monaco after leaving the club in 2019.

L’Équipe reported late on Thursday night that the club were considering bringing Vasilyev back to the club. The Russian was vice president between 2013 and 2019, and since his departure has become a player agent. According to L’Équipe, Vasilyev and the club’s president Dimitri Rybolovev are still on good terms.

Vasilyev’s return would potentially have repercussions for the structuring of the club, which reportedly could have seen sporting director Paul Mitchell potentially leave the club. Given that the arrival of Vasilyev would constitute a change in Mitchell’s role, a return to England was evoked.

However, Monaco have strongly denied L’Équipe’s report that Vasilyev is set to return to the club, just over three years after leaving. The rumours have been described as “unfounded” and have come as a surprise. Monaco are currently fourth in Ligue 1, just five points off third-placed Olympique de Marseille, and have progressed to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

The club have since released a statement, which reads as follows: “AS Monaco would like to react to the article which appeared in L’Équipe, and to the false information that it contains. AS Monaco, and its president Dimitri Rybolovlev strongly deny the supposed intention of the club to bring Vadim Vasilyev back to the club. On the contrary, the club reaffirms its full support to the management team around CEO Ben Lambrecht and sporting director Paul Mitchell. The club also gives its full support to manager Philippe Clement and his professional group going into the second part of the season.”

Jean-Michel Aulas: “Having Rayan Cherki with us is more important than anything.”

Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas has responded to L’Équipe’s report linking the club’s academy product, Rayan Cherki (19), with a move to Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

The French publication reported earlier on Wednesday morning that PSG are in talks with Lyon over the transfer of Cherki, who is viewed as the replacement for Pablo Sarabia (30), who left to join Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the window.

Cherki has become PSG’s priority since Sarabia’s departure last week. PSG have moved quickly and discretely. Les Parisiens have been in discussion with Les Gones for the past few days, and a first offer was even made for the player over the weekend. Since that offer, discussions have been ongoing, and Lyon have not closed the door to a transfer.

Cherki has just 18 months remaining on his deal with Lyon, but the club face a dilemma regarding whether to sell their academy product, both in terms of what it means for their attacking option for the rest of the season, as well as what is signifies.

Speaking on Twitter, Aulas has now responded to the report, reaffirming Cherki’s importance to the club. “Rayan is a child of the club, who is a part of our project. Seeing him courted is normal and also makes us proud of our academy, but having him with us is more important than anything,” he said.

Lorient target Tunisia midfielder Anis Ben Slimane

Foot Mercato report this afternoon that Lorient are looking to sign Tunisian international midfielder Anis Ben Slimane from Brøndby, with a potential deal worth €3m on the cards.

The 21-year-old, who has also been the subject of interest from Germany and Turkey, has been playing for the Copenhagen-based outfit since 2020. He was part of the team that were crowned national champions in the 2020/21 campaign. This season, he has three goals in 17 league games, with the team currently struggling in the lower reaches of the table. Les Merlus, on the other hand, are this season’s surprise package in Ligue 1 and currently find themselves in seventh place.

Ben Slimane notably featured in two of Tunisia’s three games at the World Cup this winter, one of his appearances coming in the win against France in the final group stage match. A former Danish youth international – he was born in Copenhagen – the versatile and technically gifted midfielder has 26 caps for the Carthage Eagles, registering four goals for the national team.

PLAYER RATINGS | Nice 1-0 Lille: Kasper Schmeichel inspires Nice to narrow victory

Ligue 1, Gameweek 20, 29/01/23

A Kasper Schmeichel-inspired OGC Nice earned a narrow victory against Lille OSC (1-0). Gaëtan Laborde scored the only goal of the game, profiting from a Rémy Cabella mistake.

Lille should have been at least three up, if not four by the time Nice scored their opener. Mohamed Bayo, Rémy Cabella and Timothy Weah all forced Schmeichel into huge saves when 1v1. Cabella had another huge chance just a few yards out, but ragged wide of the goal when it looked easier to score.

Les Dogues didn’t take their chances and they were punished. Cabella, who endured a horror-show of a first-half, fed Badredine Bouanani through on goal, and with all the time in the world, he passed across the goal to Gaëtan Laborde, who couldn’t miss with the open goal gaping.

Schmeichel’s heroics continued into the second-half. He made an important save from Bafodé Diakité to maintain Nice’s slender advantage. However, that lead should have been doubled, and it would have been if not for the legs of Lucas Chevalier, who denied Aaron Ramsey.

Jonathan David, who had been largely anonymous, got a couple of chances to level, but he couldn’t make good contact with either shot from inside the Nice box. Neither side managed to create a clear-cut opportunity before the final whistle, meaning that Nice close the gap to the European places to nine points. They are eighth, six points behind today’s opponents Lille.

Nice player ratings

Kasper Schmeichel – 9 – Scheimchel’s best game in a Nice shirt. The former Leicester City goalkeeper has come in for criticism since his summer move, and rightly so at times. However, he was the difference between victory and defeat against Lille. In the first-half alone, he made three crucial 1v1 saves from Bayo, Cabella and Weah. Les Aiglons could easily have been three goals down before they scored their opener. This victory is in large part thanks to Schmeichel’s heroics.

Melvin Bard – 6

Dante – 6 – The Brazilian looked in trouble in the opening stages, and understandably struggled to contain a pacy Lille attack. The former Bayern Munich centre-back took a yellow card for a cynical challenge with Lille breaking in behind, but as the game wore on, Dante asserted his dominance, especially when Nice dropped into a lower block, reducing the space behind the defence.

Jean-Clair Todibo – 5

Khéphren Thuram – 7 – He is such an elegant player and exudes confidence, calm and control. After a difficult start to the season, Thuram is beginning to refind his best form. Against Lille he was always in the right place and made the right choices. He makes even the most difficult of actions look so easy, and some perfectly-executed progressive passes really helped his side create chances.

Hicham Boudaoui – 6

Aaron Ramsey – 5

Sofiane Diop – 4

Gaëtan Laborde – 6 – Not the Frenchman’s most influential game, but he did prove the difference, scoring into an empty net to give Nice a crucial win.

Badredine Bouanani – 7 – The Frenchman was making his first start for Nice, and it came against his former club. He stood out from the first minute with some deft touches and eye-catching pieces of skill. Much of Nice’s joy came down his flank, and it was largely thanks to the debutant, who Les Dogues struggled to contain throughout.

Lille player ratings

Lucas Chevalier – 5

Ismaily – 4

José Fonte – 5

Tiago Djalo – 5

Bafodé Diakite – 4

Angel Gomes – 5

Leny Yoro – 5

Rémy Cabella – 2 – Nice’s best outfield player. He missed two huge close-range 1v1s, dragging his first inexplicably wide of the mark. He then set up Nice’s opener with a slack back pass straight into the path of Bouanani, who had all the time in the world to pick out Laborde, who made no mistake putting the ball into the open net. Cabella’s move to Lille has been a success thus far this season, but this is an afternoon that he will be keen to quickly forget.

Jonathan David – 5 – A really anonymous performance from one of the divisions most prolific strikers. He couldn’t get himself into the game, and when the ball did eventually come his way, he lacked his usual clinical touch, undoubtedly a bi-product of his lack of involvement in the tie.

Timothy Weah – 7 – The American, who has been tested in a variety of positions this season, was a constant threat at right-wing. On the counter, he had the pace to get in behind, and the composure to put the ball on a plate for his teammates. On another day he would have had a couple of assists to his name. He should, however, have done better when 1v1 against Schmeichel, but credit to the Danish goalkeeper who made himself imposing when he was second favourite to make the save.

Mohamed Bayo – 4 – Should have done better with his one big chance.

Olympiacos in charm offensive for free agent Florian Thauvin

With former club Marseille uninterested in re-signing the French forward, Florian Thauvin may look to Greece for his return to European football. The 30-year-old is now a free agent after his contract at Tigres UANL in Mexico was terminated.

Olympiacos and Serie A’s Udinese are reportedly interested in the former World Cup winner, but the Greek side may have the necessary pull factor to retrieve him from Mexico. As reported by Ignazio Genuardi, Olympiacos manager Míchel and player Mathieu Valbuena have both been in contact with Thauvin to convince him to move to the Piraeus side.

The right-winger had previous spells in France at Grenoble, Bastia, and Lille before a move to the French Riviera. He spent one season at Marseille before a brief move to Newcastle United. He was then loaned back to Les Olympiens before a permanent move was finalised. Across 227 appearances for Marseille in Ligue 1, he accrued 76 goals and 48 assists.
