The formation and accumulation of ice on the surfaces of outdoor equipment is a common and unavoidable phenomenon, and causes much inconvenience to human life and industrial production. Photothermal conversion, which converts solar energy into heat to melt pre-formed ice or prevent icing, is considered to be a non-contact, environmentally friendly and cost-effective anti-icing/deicing method. It is expected to solve the problem of ice accumulation, which has become a research hotspot in recent years.

Photothermal anti-icing/deicing

First, the new work reviews the anti-icing mechanisms and defects of superhydrophobic materials. Second, various photothermal materials are introduced according to the mechanism of photothermal conversion, and the latest progress in the design and manufacture of photothermal anti-icing/de-icing materials are detailed. In addition, measures and mechanisms to improve the efficiency of photothermal anti-icing/deicing are summarised. Finally, the challenges and future directions of photothermal anti-icing/de-icing materials in practical engineering applications are analyzed. Researchers have successfully developed an antibacterial and antibiofilm composite using non-toxic and hydrophobic nanomaterial, graphene nanoplatelets, via facile two step methodology including functionalisation and subsequent hydrothermal treatment.

The as-prepared composites were characterised using FE-SEM, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to obtain morphological, compositional and structural details. In addition, the antibacterial efficiency of these composites was investigated against antibiotic resistant S. aureus and E. coli. Afterwards, graphene composite based epoxy coatings were prepared on glass substrate and tested for their antibiofilm efficiency against methicillin resistant S. aureus strain.

The abundant presence of hydroxyl groups over the surface due to tannic acid, hydrophobicity of graphene and epoxy and remarkable antibacterial efficiency of tannic acid (TA), silver (Ag) and graphene synergistically enhance the antibiofilm efficiency of such coatings. According to the reseacrhers, this work presents a new strategy to develop a multifunctional coating and subsequently lessen the risk of biofilm assisted infections.

The 25-year-old is a solid full back who has shown capabilities of playing both in a standard back four or as a wing back in a back five. Although last season was not the best example of the Ivorian’s talents, it was not particularly pleasant for anyone in and around Marseille, he certainly has the ability to perform at the required level for top flight football.

Quick, willing to dribble at opponents, but nothing better than an average crosser of the ball, he has all the tools that you would expect from a modern day full-back. Add to that his slender frame and his small stature, then you have a player that can struggle one-on-one that isn’t helped by his lapses of concentration. That is especially apparent in the air, where he does not rise high enough to compensate for his height and will be regularly beaten when challenged with balls over the top as he can fail to register runs in behind his position.

The game that highlights all of what he could bring was against champions Paris Saint-Germain in February, where he essentially gave them the lead in the first few minutes. New Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri is keen for the club to return to the 3-5-2 formation they have employed successfully in the past and in this kind of set up, Dja Djédjé is more likely to shine. There is less pressure on him to fulfil his defensive duties and with added cover, he will be able to enjoy attempting to find the heads of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney in the box on a weekly basis.

Should the formation bomb and Dja Djédjé have to revert further back, then it will really become a concern. Kuopiolaisen Lauluklubi Maestran yrittäjä, musiikin maisteri Jaana Turunen toteaa, että olemme jakaantuneet musiikin tekijöihin ja musiikin kuuntelijoihin. Ja tämä on todellinen harmi, sillä musisoinnilla on tutkitusti roppakaupalla terveysvaikutuksia: laulaessa erittyy mielihyvähormoneja, laulaminen voimaannuttaa ja virkistää ja jopa hetkellisesti parantaa vastustuskykyä. Terveysvaikutuksia on siis tiedossa viis siitä laulatko mukana kuorossa, itseksesi suihkussa tai viikonloppuna karaokebaarissa.

Tosin moni meistä toteaa, että ei ikinä avaisi ääntänsä toisten kuullen, sen verran hyvin on muistissa peruskoulun laulukoe luokan edessä.
– Sellaisia ihmisiä, joita on lannistettu ja lapsena sanottu, että auot vain suutasi kun muut esiintyy, niin kyllä niitä tulee vastaan koko ajan, Turunen toteaa.

Mutta eipä hätää, laulamisen aloittamisen kynnys on matala.
– Laulaminen on siitä kiva musiikkiharrastus, että jokaisella on oma instrumenttinsa olemassa. Tosin koneisto ruostuu jos on laulanut vähän, mutta ruostetta saa kyllä poistettua kun vaan ryhtyy laulamaan ja harjoittelemaan systemaattisesti, Jaana Turunen kertoo.

– Parasta on kun kuulee omin korvin kuinka harjaannutaan ja opitaan lauluja. Olemme yhteinen soitin koko kuoro, kuvaa puolestaan ahkera musiikinharrastaja Marita Jama.

A new study presents a comparison of bio-based epoxide-diamine coatings prepared with acyclic and cyclic aliphatic diamines.

As replacements for bisphenol-A, new bio-based and reactive epoxy-amine coatings have been investigated in a new study. Bio-based precursor, epoxy-functionalised tung oil (ETO) was synthesised using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and tung oil via a Diels–Alder reaction. The new ETO-diamine-cured systems were prepared with the equivalent molar ratio at room temperature. ETO was cured with acyclic aliphatic (Jeffamine D400) and cyclic aliphatic (Epicure 3300) amines, at four temperatures ranging from 25 to 150°C. The coatings were then compared in terms of their thermal and mechanical properties.

Greener and more reactive tung oil-based epoxide coatings

Test results showed that the epoxide-diamine polymers demonstrated thermal stability up to 170°C. While all the cured systems exhibited good pencil hardness, cross-hatch adhesion, impact resistance, and reverse resistance properties, the epoxide-acyclic diamine system demonstrated greater pendulum hardness and notable pull-off adhesion at 150°C. The research demonstrates the potential for greener and more reactive tung oil-based epoxide coatings with enhanced properties.
