As reported by Le Parisien, OGC Nice coach Christophe Galtier has lost confidence in club owners INEOS and their running of the team this season and has never been so close to leaving the Riviera club.

The hierarchical situation at Nice remains in flux with decisions still to be made over what the club’s leadership will look like next season. In a sensational interview criticising Galtier in L’Équipe, sporting director Julien Fournier suggested that he would remain until September at least while Galtier has become a main target of new PSG sporting director Luis Campos to take over from current manager Mauricio Pochettino. The assessment of the leadership team by INEOS’ former British Olympic cycling coach Dave Brailsford has already taken three weeks with it’s conclusions yet to emerge.

Former coach Lucien Favre is favourite to take over, should Galtier move on, say the Paris paper, with the club already preparing for life after Galtier following just one season in charge after winning the French title last season with Lille. With two years left on his deal, PSG would need to pay €5m to secure Galtier’s services.

As discussed by So Foot, Kylian Mbappé’s decision to stay at PSG and sign a new three-year contract in France will benefit those far beyond the Parc des Princes.

Although the full details of the deal are yet to emerge, assuming Mbappé’s salary is the €50m reported earlier this year, the French government could hope to recoup up to €60m income tax and other tax contributions alone.

Meanwhile, with Ligue 1’s broadcast rights up for renewal ahead of the 2024/25 season, a year before the end of the 23-year-old striker’s new contract in summer 2025, Ligue 1 will be able to negotiate upwards towards some ambitious targets with the attraction of Mbappé likely to be present.

Competing clubs, although sportingly disadvantaged by the player staying, will benefit from Mbappé’s continued ability to bring fans to the league and stadiums. With Ligue 1 stadiums filling to an average of just 60% capacity overall, PSG away games bring full houses and high prices – a more than useful windfall for some clubs.

Just moments after they were consigned to Ligue 2, Saint-Étienne released a statement, which alludes to some upcoming “important news.”

The statement from owners Bernard Caïazzo and Roland Romeyer says, “If we ever committed errors in the past season, we have never stopped working to ensure the longevity of Saint-Étienne, including on the financial situation, which will allow it to compete in Ligue 2 next season.”

The statement continued, “Shortly, we will announce important news concerning the future of the club. An important page of our lives is turning, but we place the institution of Saint-Étienne above everything and hope that it will re-find very quickly – and we are convinced that it will – the path of the elite.”

The announcement comes amidst rumours of the impending sale of the club to David Blitzer’s multi-club group. According to Foot Mercato, the owners received an offer from Canadian businessman John Chayka, which promised not to run a multi-club project, but was ignored due to the current owners’ close relationship with Blitzer. 

As reported by Le Parisien, PSG will not be signing Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé this summer.

Having pursued the 25-year-old France international for some time, both in January and ahead of this coming summer’s transfer window under the leadership of sporting director Leonardo, and being in talks with the player in recent days as Nasser Al-Khelaifi met with the player’s agent, PSG have ended their talks with Dembélé.

The reason: Luis Campos. The former Lille and Monaco sporting director will assume the role vacated by Leonardo’s sacking this week and he has decided to end the club’s pursuit of the soon-to-be free agent.

Two aspects of the transfer gave Campos pause. Firstly, the player’s injury record which has seen 13 separate fitness issues over five seasons in Spain, say the paper, causing him to miss 120 games for Barcelona. The second concerns his ability to adapt to Campos’ new ideals, with Dembélé often criticised for a poor attitude and lack of focus amid a partying lifestyle.

Instead, Campos, whose appointment is not yet official, prefers fiercely dedicated players and sees Dembélé as a risky signing.

Foot Mercato report that Lille are interested in bringing in former Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma coach Paulo Fonseca to replace Jocelyn Gourvennec.

As initially reported by A Bola, Les Dogues are in talks with the Portuguese manager after a disappointing season which saw the team finish in 10th, a major drop-off from the previous year’s title win.

The manager himself is interested in going to Ligue 1, although no concrete offer is on the table as of yet. Fonseca is currently a free agent, having left his spot at Roma to compatriot José Mourinho last year.

Montpellier have tonight announced that midfielder and captain Téji Savanier has signed a new deal with the club, tying his future to the team until 2026.

The 30-year-old, who returned to his formative club in 2019 and has been one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in the league for the past few seasons, was not short on potential suitors had he decided to leave.

He has instead decided to stay at his hometown club. This season, he notched 8 goals and 7 assists in 29 appearances.

Brest have this afternoon announced the signing of midfielder Mathias Pereira Lage, whose contract with Angers was expiring at the end of next month.

The 25-year-old joins the Brittany side on a three-year deal and leaves Le SCO after three years, having made 82 appearances and scored 10 goals.

The former Portugal youth international, who broke through at his formative and hometown club Clermont, becomes the 11th-place finishers’ first signing of the summer.

As reported by La Voix du Nord, Ligue 1 Lens are soon expected to complete the signing of Polish midfielder Lukasz Poreba.

The 22-year-old Zaglebie Lubin man was courted by the French club in the winter and, with his deal set to expire in Poland this summer, Lens are poised to complete a deal on a free transfer, plus €400k in compensation.

Poreba’s arrival is expected to compensate for the retirement of veteran central midfielder Yannick Cahuzac at the end of the season. A Polish under 21 international, Poreba has played 88 league games over the last four seasons for Lubin.

Worried about his spot in the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup, Georginio Wijnaldum (31) is seriously considering his future at PSG, according to Goal.

Wijnaldum has not been called up for the latest round of Netherlands fixtures after a difficult year at PSG, and is, therefore “seriously thinking about his future as he wants to regain his place in the national side.”  

Someone closely involved in the case has said, “Everything remains open and no decision has been taken. The next step will be to know who the coach will be.” 

Wijnaldum played 31 matches in Ligue 1 last season, scoring just once and registering 3 assists.

As reported by Le10Sport, Angers are in the process of signing Niort striker Ibrahim Sissoko after a standout season in Ligue 2, scoring 15 goals.

The 26-year-old’s contract is up at the end of the month and is seeing considerable Ligue 1 interest as a result, with Mohamed Toubache-Ter reporting that both Montpellier and Strasbourg are also keen on the player.

However, it’s Angers who lead the race to sign the Malian international forward and, although nothing has been signed as yet, Gérald Baticle’s side are expected to secure the player’s services this summer.

This would be Sissoko’s first spell in Ligue 1 after scoring 25 second-tier goals in 49 games over the last two seasons for mid-table Niort.
