Champions Cup: Tabai Matson happy with Harlequins win but not their performance against Racing 92

Harlequins boss Tabai Matson was pleased to come away with a 14-10 win against Racing 92 in the Champions Cup but was not satisfied with his team’s performance.

The weather conditions were especially tricky, with heavy rain turning the contest into a tight clash at Twickenham Stoop that saw an Andre Esterhuizen try as the difference on the day.

Failed to capitalise

Matson, however, was upset his side could not make the most of their numerical advantage after Racing star Kition Kamikamica was sent off with half an hour to play.

The coach feels his team were tactically off at times during the game and admitted there would be a big review so Quins can learn from their mistakes.

“It wasn’t the prettiest and we were probably lucky, to be fair. We did our best to ruin that. The conditions were poor but we made some poor calls,” Matson said.

“For all that, we’re back in the hunt for the knockout stage again after getting the four points. Getting the win was the most important thing, but there’s lot to review on Tuesday.

“We’ve got lots to review, we tried to play way too much and that’s a good learning for us at this time of year because at the end of December there’s more of that type of rugby to come.

“Ultimately we move forward in Europe and that’s the key thing.”

Dealt well with the threatening Russell

Quins did exceptionally well to minimise the influence of Racing’s Scottish fly-half Finn Russell, but Matson still had praise for the world-class playmaker.

“We knew that he would be a key guy because he can control the ball really well. It wasn’t really an attacking game but a lot of their territory battle is won by him,” he said.

“He still had a great game, even in these conditions. The old Scots know how to put the ball behind you! He did a really good job but we cornered him a couple of times.”

Russell has been linked to a move to Bath, but the pivot quickly poured cold water on the speculation.

“No, no the weather’s too bad! La Defense Arena is indoors!” he said.

“There’s been a lot of chatter around that. Nothing’s been confirmed but there’s a lot of chat around it.”

Official | Xavi Simons joins PSV Eindhoven from PSG

PSV Eindhoven have announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons on a permanent, five-year deal,  with the 19-year-old leaving Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

As initially reported by Le Parisien and confirmed by sources contacted by Get French Football News, the two clubs have entered into a side deal which includes a buy-back clause despite the apparent free transfer.

RMC Sport add that Simons was looking to extend with PSG and the club wanted him to stay on, but the Eredivisie side wanted to have the midfielder under contract. The Ligue 1 champions instead have a €4m buy-back clause at the end of the season.

The former Barcelona man leaves the French capital – for now – after three years at the club. This season, he made nine appearances under Mauricio Pochettino, as he sought to compete with PSG’s more experienced midfield options for a place in the squad.

The Dutch youth international saw his game time pick up at the end of the seaon, as he notched a Ligue 1 winner’s medal to add to the Coupe de France in 2020/21

Lacazette played a key role in Corentin Tolisso’s Lyon return

L’Équipe reported during Corentin Tolisso’s first press conference since rejoining the club that Alexandre Lacazette was involved in convincing the player to return to Lyon. Tolisso rejoined his formative club yesterday on a five-year deal after a five year spell at Bayern Munich.

During the press conference the player spoke about his relationship to Alexandre Lacazette and how he played a key role in the transfer:

“I’ve been talking to Alex a lot. To tell you the truth, I think he messaged me more in the last month than he has in the last five years! (laughs) But I also spoke a lot with Anthony Lopes. Alex has played a big role, he’s really a friend for me outside football. The fact that he was there was an extra asset in my decision. Whatever happens, I had the desire and the ambition to come back to Lyon, I just didn’t know when. It’s happened now, but I’ve always had this desire.”

Tolisso spent five years at the current German champions, but despite injury issues blighting most of his time in Bavaria, the player ended up making a century of appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals and assisting 15.

FIFA World Cup: How Argentine rugby players celebrated famous victory over France

Argentine rugby players have been sharing how they celebrated their country winning the FIFA World Cup on social media.

The Argentines have been terrorising their French clubmates while others have simply pitched up to training in donning their country’s colours.

The French suffer

France players will have been holding their breath during the penalty shootouts on Sunday evening as many of them had more than just national pride on the line.

After losing a bet with clubmate Bautista Delguy, Clermont and France winger Damian Penaud was forced to wear a classy Argentina jersey today.

Similarly, Castres’ flanker Mathieu Babillot had to post a video of him holding the Argentina flag and singing the national anthem after losing his bet to Benjamin Urdapilleta.

Over in Paris, several teammates filmed Juan Imhoff as he charged around Racing 92‘s training facilities with his Argentina football shirt on. The veteran winger was also spotted waving his flag around.

Celebrations continue in England

While Newcastle Falcons don’t have any French players, that didn’t stop Mateo Carreras and Matias Moroni from celebrating Sunday’s victory by blasting music and singing at the training ground on Monday.

Staying in the Premiership, Gloucester’s Matías Alemanno and Santiago Carreras sported country colours, with Alemanno draping his country’s flag over his shoulders.

Other reactions

Another player who will have been celebrating Argentina’s triumph is Springbok playmaker Damian Willemse. The South African posted videos during the game of him enjoying the match while wearing a number 14 Los Pumas jersey, presumably from a swap he made with Emiliano Boffelli.

Maro Itoje reacted to the final, tweeting ‘Messi’ followed by clapping hands emojis and goat emojis.

Agustin Creevy tweeted ‘CAMPEONES DEL MUNDO’, translated to ‘WORLD CHAMPIONS.

Finally, former Pumas scrum-half Agustin Pichot congratulated his countryman, tweeting: ‘That pride!!! What emotion: Players, all the staff Lionel Scaloni and his team, their families; Congratulations on achieving your dream and that of all Argentines. Lionel … what an inspiration for the boys; you are unique, yesterday today and always.’

Paulo Fonseca wants to build an ‘ambitious team’ at Lille

As reported by L’Équipe during the manager’s first press conference, Paulo Fonseca affirmed his intention to build an “ambitious team” at Lille which “plays attractive football”. The new Lille boss has signed a 2-year contract with LOSC, and during his first press conference gave a clear idea of the kind of identity that the Northern club will strive to create next season.

The former AS Roma man said: “I am an offensive coach, I want the team to take the initiative, to dominate, to go forward, to control the ball. I want the team to be aggressive when we don’t have the ball or when we lose it.”

The former centre-back arrived in the north of France yesterday to visit the club’s training ground, and is set to oversee his first training session with Les Dogues on Friday.

The 49-year-old’s first job outside of Portugal was a three-year stint with Shakhtar Donetsk, which notably saw his team beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City away in the Champions League. His two seasons in Serie A saw him finish fifth and then seventh with AS Rom.

Fonseca, who was back in Kyiv when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began earlier this year, now returns to management after a year out with what is expected to be a two-year contract with the 2020/21 Ligue 1 title winners.

Yvon Mvogo and Benoît Costil targetted by Lorient

Click:easy steering please

L’Équipe are reporting that, in their search for a goalkeeper, Ligue 1 side Lorient are strongly considering RB Leipzig’s Yvon Mvogo (28), who has spent the last two seasons on loan at PSV Eindhoven.

Last season, goalkeeping duties were relatively evenly shared between Paul Nardi (28) and Matthieu Dreyer (33) in what was a less than ideal scenario for a club that had one of the worst defensive records in the division (63 goals conceded).

Mvogo is seen as a solution to the problem. The Swiss international goalkeeper has one year left on his contract at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig but has spent the last two seasons plying his trade in the Eredivisie. Last season, he only made 8 league appearances for PSV, as well as another two appearances in the Europa Conference league.

However, Lorient could face competition for his signature with Spanish and German clubs also keen on the Swiss goalkeeper. As a backup option, Lorient are considering Benoît Costil (34), and have even met with the former Bordeaux goalkeeper, who would be available on a free transfer.

Igor Tudor set to replace Jorge Sampaoli at Marseille

According to Saber Desfarges, Igor Tudor is expected to be imminently appointed as the new Marseille manager, following the shock departure of Jorge Sampaoli on Friday.

L’Équipe had previously reported that Tudor, formerly of Serie A side Hellas Verona, had been made the priority by Marseille president Pablo Longoria. Desfarges is now reporting that the Croat’s arrival is imminent and he is expected to be in Marseille to wrap up a deal within the next few hours.

He is expected to put pen to paper on a two-year deal to replace Sampaoli, who had led the side to second in Ligue 1 last season. The Argentine coach left the club as a result of a perceived lack of ambition from the club’s hierarchy.

Tudor, who is currently attached having left Hellas Verona at the end of May, fits Longoria’s criteria in terms of age and also play style.

Fulham to beat Nice to signing of Manor Solomon

Foot Mercato report this afternoon that Nice are set to see newly-promoted Premier League side Fulham beat them to the signing of Israeli midfielder Manor Solomon from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Reports last week had indicated that Les Aiglons were confident of getting a deal over the line for the 22-year-old, not least following an update in FIFA’s transfer regulations on players plying their trade in Ukraine following the start of Russia’s invasion.

Solomon’s agent had also been spotted in Nice, with the midfielder having been one of new manager Lucien Favre’s priorities for the transfer window. A transfer would have also been facilitated by the fact that he owns a Portuguese passport. Instead, he has decided to join the Londoners.

The Israel international has scored 22 goals in his 103 appearances with the Ukrainian team, who are Champions League regulars. His deal with Shakhtar expires at the end of the 2023 calendar year.

Official | Celtic’s Karamoko Dembélé joins Brest on a 4-year deal

Brest announced this morning the signing of Celtic’s Karamoko Dembélé (19) – who signs a four-year deal at the Breton club after being released by the Glaswegian side, where he famously signed a contract with the first team at the tender age of 15-years old.

Karamoko said in the official club communiqué: “I’ve come to Brest because I saw that the project presented by Greg Lorenzi was good. It’s something that suits me and I think I can get playing time here. It’s a great opportunity that came my way and I was interested”.

On his own playing style the winger said: “I’m very explosive, I play on the right or as a number 10 but I like to have fun and give the fans pleasure and of course I like to score and win.”

The English right-winger has struggled to make a big impact on Celtic’s first team, after making his reserve debut four years ago. Last season the London-born one-time capped England U18 International only made 10 appearances in Scotland, scoring one goal in 132 minutes.

Born in the suburbs of London to Ivorian parents, Karamoko has played youth internationals for England and Scotland but remains eligible to play for Côte d’Ivoire, as does his brother Siriki who plays for Premier League side Bournemouth.

Marseille interested in Monaco’s Sofiane Diop

According to Foot Mercato, Marseille are interested in AS Monaco attacker Sofiane Diop (22), although potentially insurmountable differences between the clubs make a deal unlikely at this point.

Diop flourished under Niko Kovac in the first half of the 2021/22 season, but following the arrival of Philippe Clement in January, he saw his game time limited. Borussia Dortmund, OGC Nice and Leicester City have all been linked with a move for Diop, and Marseille are the latest side to be linked.

However, the form of the deal represents a significant hurdle for any deal. Due to the price being touted, Marseille would only be able to bring the France U21 international in on loan with an option to buy. Monaco, however, are only interested in selling the player on a permanent deal.

The clubs are, therefore “far apart and in should things remain as they are, no agreement is likely.”
