Christophe Galtier says Rennes are “the best team in the league right now.”

Speaking ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash between the two sides, Nice manager Christophe Galtier has hailed his upcoming opponents Rennes as the best team in the league currently.

The clash sees Bruno Génésio’s men, currently in third place, take on Les Aiglons, who lie in fourth. Both will be looking for a result to keep the pressure on second place Marseille in the automatic Champions League spot, who are 1 and 3 points ahead of them respectively. His words transcribed in L’Équipe, the Ligue 1 title holder points out their exceptional attack this campaign.

“Rennes are the best attack in the league [63 goals] and have a good defense. Everything has been in place there for a few months. We’ll be facing the best team in the league right now. We’re expecting a tough match.”

“If we let the team play like they know how to and we fall into the traps they can lead us into, we can quickly get into trouble. But on the other hand, it’s a chance to play Rennes at home. The margins are small. It won’t be a double-edged match but rather a direct clash.”

Benjamin Bourigeaud wanted by Lazio and Roma

As reported by Le10Sport, Rennes midfielder Benjamin Bourigeaud, one of Ligue 1’s standout players this season, is receiving significant interest from Italian clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

Confirming previous reports from Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, the outlet say that Lazio are leading the way to sign the 28-year-old Frenchman while Roma are positioning themselves to compete with their cross-city rivals for the player.

A well-resourced OGC Nice, meanwhile, have also been reportedly looking at the possibility of signing Bourigeaud but Le10Sport say they have been told there is nothing concrete from Christophe Galtier’s side as yet.

As reported by the club, Turkish side Eyüpspor have signed former Troyes loanee and Luxembourg international Gerson Rodrigues.

The 26-year-old forward had joined the promoted Ligue 1 side back in September on loan from Dynamo Kyiv but he was suspended last month for disciplinary breaches by the club before having his loan terminated.

Rodrigues, however, with Ukrainian football suspended due to Russia’s invasion of the country, has resurfaced on loan in the Turkish second division for the rest of the season from Kyiv.

PLAYER RATINGS | Strasbourg 1-1 Lyon, OL rescue a point after lethargic display

Ligue 1 21/22, Round 31 – 10/4/22

STRASBOURG – 1 (Sissoko 20)

Matz Sels, 5

Alexander Djiku, 5

Gerzino Nyamsi, 6 – He’s rapidly catching Djiku as Strasbourg’s premier defender after a season of significant growth following a seemingly speculative move from Rennes. This was another proactive and bullish defensive performance at the heart of Racing’s back three.

Lucas Perrin, 5

Dimitri Liénard, 5

Anthony Caci, 6

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, 6

Ibrahima Sissoko, 7 – This was another astute and focused display from, quietly, one the league’s best midfielders this term, who has been released in a more attacking role of late. It was he who opened the scoring by nipping in between a pair of ponderous defenders. His intensity and direct style was often too much for OL.

Jean-Eudes Aholou, 6

Kevin Gameiro, 6 – The perfect foil for Ajorque’s physicality as a major creative force in attack and was full of energy and intensity as a constant nuisance for Da Silva and Denayer, although he faded after half time.

Ludovic Ajorque, 6

Others: Diarra 5, Guilbert 5.

LYON – 1 (Ekambi 90)

Anthony Lopes, 4

Léo Dubois, 3

Jason Denayer, 4

Damien Da Silva, 3 – Not far from a 2. Slow and lethargic in all areas and looked like he, understandably, lacked rhythm and fitness having been barely used this season. He couldn’t handle Ajorque’s strength and failed to pick up Sissoko’s intelligent running from midfield.

Henrique, 4

Tanguy Ndombele, 3 – After a domineering display in mid-week against West Ham in Europe, this was a weak and lacklustre outing as Sissoko and Ahoulou overrun him and Aouar in the first hour. His dithering was chiefly to blame for Sissoko’s goal, who was allowed to sneak to poke home.

Houssem Aouar, 5

Lucas Paquetá, 3 – Completely anonymous. He barely managed to get out of first gear after a busy run of games in which he has, admittedly, been afforded minimal rest. A woeful air shot for his best opening of the game summed it up.

Tetê, 3

Karl Toko Ekambi, 4

Moussa Dembélé, 4

Others: Pollersbeck 5, Kadewere 4, Faivre 5, Jeff Reine-Adelaide 5, Barcola 5.

Mohamed Bayo given suspended prison sentence

Click:of the

As reported by L’Équipe, via AFP, Clermont’s Guinea international striker Mohamed Bayo was handed a two month suspended prison sentence today for ‘drunk driving’ and ‘unintentional injuries’ by a Clermont-Ferrand court.

Bayo accepted the sentence proposed after an admission of guilt. Previously, he was scheduled to appear in court later this year where he could have received a greater punishment.

The case dates back to October and a collision with another car in Chamalières. At the time the player’s blood alcohol level was found to be 0.88 g/l after trying to flee and arrested by police. The couple in the other vehicle were slightly injured in the accident.

The 23-year-old player was also sentenced to a fine of €4,000 and the suspension of his driving license.

Kylian Mbappé on clicking with Neymar and Lionel Messi: “It’s a shame it’s only happening now.”

Speaking to Canal+ in the wake of Paris Saint-Germain’s 6-1 demolition of Clermont, Kylian Mbappé reflect on the recent form he’s shown alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi.

PSG’s star front three have 11 goals and 8 assists between them in the last two games, showing a level of understanding which the Frenchman himself regrets has come so late on in the season.

“We’re happy, I think we enjoyed ourselves a lot and we gave out some enjoyment as well. We’re continuing our road to that 10th title [in PSG’s history], I don’t think it’s very far, and we’re very satisfied.”

“[On the understanding] Yes, it’s a shame it’s only happening now, but then there were a fair amount of circumstances and events that meant we were delayed. But we feel that we’re three quality players, and we trying to help the team as much as possible and that’s what happened today.”

“[On regrets over not clicking together earlier] That’s life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, you have to keep looking forward. It’s in the past now. We had some pain, which is still present but you need to keep positive, we have to show that we’re a big club and a big team and that we’re here to win trophies.”

PLAYER RATINGS | Monaco 1-0 Nice, Galtier’s side are again shut out as ASM take key win

Ligue 1 21/22, Round 33 – 20/4/22

MONACO – 1 (Golovin 45)

Alexander Nübel, 5

Ruben Aguilar, 5

Benoît Badiashile, 7 – This was a stoic and organized defensive display as he handled Delort and Dolberg with ease. His astute positioning and heading ability were key to Monaco’s clean sheet in a crucial win.

Axel Disasi, 5

Caio Henrique, 5

Aurélien Tchouaméni, 5

Youssouf Fofana, 6

Vanderson, 6

Aleksandr Golovin, 7 – His inclusion in the side has added more balance and vision of late and a deft reverse ball that put Ben Yedder in before the break should have equalled an assist to add to his close range opener.

Wissam Ben Yedder, 4 – Despite some lethal recent form, his finishing was erratic here and he should have given Monaco a more comfortable lead but wasted three major chances thanks to a weak finish when put in on Benitez before half time, mistiming a presentable headed chance and hitting the post after the break.

Kevin Volland, 4

Others: Martins 5, Boadu 5, Jakobs 5.

NICE – 0

Walter Benítez, 4

Jordan Lotomba, 5

Flavius Daniliuc, 4

Jean-Clair Todibo, 4

Melvin Bard, 4

Mario Lemina, 3 – He was unable to impose himself in midfield and was subbed after an hour having missed a free header at 0-0 and his hesitation on the edge of the area nearly cost Nice a goal early on.

Khéphren Thuram, 6

Hicham Boudaoui, 3

Bilal Brahimi, 6 – His first start was a lively one for the highly-regarded but little seen forward and was the only source of creativity during much of the first half with his pace and skill but, aside from one precise corner for a Lemina header, his deliveries were often wayward.

Kasper Dolberg, 4

Andy Delort, 4

Others: Rosario 5, Kluivert 5, Gouiri 5, Amavi 5.

Lyon’s Jason Denayer: “It’s a collective problem.”

Following Lyon’s elimination from the Europa League last night at the hands of West Ham, centre-back Jason Denayer spoke to RMC Sport about the

“The whole team believed before the match, but we didn’t implement what we had to in order to solidify our opportunities and to be defensively solid, since we conceded three goals from moves that were not really that dangerous in nature. It’s a collective problem, we didn’t know how to put everything into place collectively to make the difference. It’s understandable that the supporters are disappointed, because we’re not having a good season in the league and now we’ve missed the chance to do anything else. In Ligue 1, while it’s still mathematically possible [to qualify for Europe], we have to believe, to give everything and try everything.”

ESTAC Troyes accuse OGC Nice supporters of attacking fans

OGC Nice squeaked past ESTAC Troyes during their Ligue 1 encounter at the Allianz Riviera on Sunday, beating their visitors 1-0 thanks to a last minute combination between striker Evann Guessand and box-to-box midfield player Khephren Thuram.

The game, a stalemate for long periods of time, left a bitter taste in the mouths of City Football Group-owned ESTAC Troyes on the pitch, but also off of it.

According to the visiting team’s official Twitter account, travelling ESTAC supporters were “cowardly attacked” by OGC Nice fans after the final whistle. The LFP has yet to make a statement as to whether or not they will investigate this further.

L’ESTAC a une pensée pour ses supporters ayant effectués le déplacement jusqu’à Nice, pour soutenir leur équipe et qui se sont lâchement faits agressés peu après le match. Le club condamne fermement tout acte de violence. Courage.#onestensemble #TeamESTAC 💙🤍
