United Rugby Championship: Jake White says Bulls’ inexperience proved costly against Stormers

Bulls boss Jake White believes his team’s “inexperience” was a big reason for their 37-27 defeat against the Stormers in their United Rugby Championship (URC) clash in Cape Town on Friday.

The Stormers were full value for their win in front of 30,000 spectators and sealed their victory with three second-half tries in the space of five minutes during the early stages of the second half.

Received criticism over selections

White came in for some criticism when he opted to rest most of his first choice players for their recent Champions Cup matches against Lyon and Exeter Chiefs.

Most of the Bulls‘ senior contingent were recalled for the clash with the Stormers but that plan backfired as the home side blew their arch rivals away with a superb attacking display.

By contrast, the Bulls could not build momentum as they played with 14 men for 20 minutes in the first half after Marco van Staden and Elrigh Louw were yellow carded.

However, they did well to score a try through Nizaam Carr and were level at 13-13 by half-time before those three tries – from Joseph Dweba, Suleiman Hartzenberg and Leolin Zas – soon after the restart knocked the wind out of their sails.

“I think we just showed moments of inexperience,” White said after the match.

“That’s the only disappointing thing I can think of. There was a tap penalty on their line, where we’ve got five or six plays that we run, but we tap the ball and run and knock it on.

“Then I was making a substitution, and we got the timings wrong where there was one less defender on the far side when they ran the ball from the kick-off [for Hartzenberg’s try], so I suppose that was inexperience in that there was a miscommunication.

“It was one of those games. We scored three tries to four, but we looked a little bit inexperienced with some of the actions that we had.”

White pointed out that Stormers head coach John Dobson and his coaching staff were more experienced and that the Stormers boss did not have the same responsibilities as he had in his role as the Pretoria-based outfit’s director of rugby.

“We’re inexperienced still, and we’re still growing. We’ve got a lot of evolution to do,” he said. “The Stormers are probably the most experienced coaching staff in the whole competition. They’ve been together for eight, 10 years and some of them with the juniors as well.

“John Dobson doesn’t coach Currie Cup. I am the director of rugby. I have to coach and make sure all the juniors, seniors and Currie Cup guys are available to play. If I was only coaching the senior side, then I wouldn’t worry about who was available for the Currie Cup because it wouldn’t be my brief. I think it’s important for people to understand my brief as DoR.

“Western Province didn’t make the play-offs last year in the Currie Cup. Those are decisions I have to make and explain to my board.

“There are 32 games left. Considering some of the Springboks are out with World Cup camps, you’re going to have to box very clever with which teams you want to use and how many players you’re going to use.”

Friday’s defeat was the Bulls’ fourth successive loss to the Stormers in the URC but White did not read too much into that and insisted that his decision to rest his senior players for this clash could only be measured at the end of the season.

Still winless against Stormers in the URC

“We have lost four times to the Stormers in a row, and we haven’t beaten them in this competition yet,” he added. “It was important, and for any team that plays away in these derby games, you want to get the win,” said White.

“We can beat them. You can look at stats any way you want. Since I’ve been at the Bulls, we’ve beaten them more times in Currie Cup, Super Rugby Unlocked and all those games. It just depends on what you want to look at.

“They’re a good team. They’re champions of this tournament. They’ve got experienced players, a coaching staff that has been together for eight years, and it’s a massive advantage when you’re competing at the level we’re competing at.”

A reported by RMC, Lens midfielder, and 2021 GFFN 100 winner, Seko Fofana has agreed to return to Ivory Coast national team duty after three years in the international wilderness.

Pictured with national team coach, and former Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne manager, Jean-Louis Gasset, the Ivorian federation announced today that the 27-year-old midfielder will make his come back for the Elephants during the September international break and the scheduled qualifiers against Comoros ahead of the 2023 African Nations Cup. Gasset met with Fofana in Rodez, France, today where the player is currently in pre-season training with Lens.

The last of Fofana’s six Ivory Coast appearances came in 2019 and the player had asked last September to not be called up again as he wanted to focus on club football. A year later, Fofana has enjoyed another superb season in France and was named in the UNFP’s Ligue 1 team of the season while winning the Marc Vivien Foé award for the best African player in Ligue 1.

PSG and Chelsea have been informed of Robert Lewandowski’s imminent Barça move

According to Fabrizio Romano, both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have been informed of Robert Lewandowski’s imminent move to Barcelona. The two clubs have been told that the Polish striker’s move to Catalonia is in the final stages – with the player only intending to move to Barcelona. Lewandowski agreed personal terms with Barcelona four months ago, and will sign a three-year deal at the club.

RMC Sport reported earlier this week that Barcelona met Bayern Munich’s asking price of €50m in what was the Catalonian side’s third bid for the forward. Paris Saint-Germain considered Lewandowski as the club’s number one target in their search for a striker this summer – PSG director Antero Henrique held talks with the players’ agents at the end of last month.

However, the move was always dependant on talks between Bayern Munich and Barcelona breaking down – it looks certain that PSG will miss out on their ‘dream’ signing of the summer. The Parisian side have been looking at other options, such as Sassoulo’s Gianluca Scamacca (22) and Reims’ Hugo Ekitiké (20) – the club have reached an agreement with the latter today and are on the verge of signing the young striker as a back-up option to Kylian Mbappé.

Hill: ‘I’d get Alonso to defend me in a murder charge!’

Damon Hill praised Fernando Alonso for the Aston Martin driver’s remarkable sharpness and presence of mind amid the chaos that unfolded on the second restart in Melbourne last weekend.

As cars veered off course or into the gravel trap at the first corner after the second red flag, Alonso was tagged into spin by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

The Aston charger survived the contact but as he collected himself, the Spaniard fell from third all the way to the back of the field.

No sooner had Alonso got going than there was carnage up ahead as both Alpine drivers eliminated themselves, a crash that brought out the second red flag of the day.

However, while many believed that the cars would line up behind the safety car in the order in which they had survived the commotion, Alonso radioed in to signal to his crews that the order should be rolled back to the grid positions at the restart, referring to last year’s British Grand Prix as a precedent.

This proved to be the correct procedure, but Hill was amazed by Alonso’s vigilance and alertness.

“We were making a joke that he should be a lawyer,” Hill joked on the F1 Nation podcast. “I’d get him to defend me in a murder charge!”

“It’s boring driving the car, he needs something else to do. He’s going around going, ‘Can I do the strategy as well? Give me more information.’

“He already understands the rules. You’d expect someone who’s been in Formula 1 as long as he has and had all the experiences to have learned something, but you can’t automatically assume that.”

Hill noted that Alonso’s savviness was not unlike the farsighted intelligence of one Michael Schumacher.

“He’s invested in this, he understands it, and he knows, like Michael Schumacher as well,” added the 1996 F1 World Champion.

“Michael Schumacher understood where the openings were, where the opportunities were, and he took advantage of those, and it’s the same with Fernando.

“He’s got to become a team boss eventually, because he’d be brilliant. He just understands this game.”
